Stars in the Milky Way appear to be missing some of the element lithium, and new observations
of a distant star cluster confirm that the problem isn't unique to our galaxy.

GALACTIC QUARTET The way invisible dark matter warped the light from
distant galaxies, shown here as the swirl
of material surrounding four giant galaxies in
cluster Abell 3827 (seen in this Hubble Space Telescope photograph), suggested that dark matter can separate from
stars when galaxies collide.
Remarkably, the distribution
of star - forming galaxies around a
cluster of galaxies in the more
distant universe (5 billion years ago) corresponds much more closely with the weak lensing map than a slice
of the more nearby universe (3 billion years ago).

star cluster that was torn apart when it passed through the disc
of the Milky Way.
Gillian Wilson, professor
of physics and astronomy at UC Riverside, added, «Fascinatingly, however, the study found that the percentage
of galaxies which had stopped forming
stars in those young,
distant clusters, was much lower than the percentage found in much older, nearby
clusters.

Subsequently, however, an even more
distant quasar with a tentative redshift
of z = 6.40 was announced on January 9, 2003, near the SDSS detection limit

distant, fast -

cluster Abell 370 with a redshift
of z ~ 6.56, which appears to be converting about 40 Solar - masses into
stars annually; (PhysicsWeb; IFA press release; Hu et al, 2002, in pdf; and erratum); and the possible «superwind - galaxy» LAE J1044 - 0130 (Subaru press release; and Ajiki et al, 2002, in pdf).
