PJS: Before talking about the contents
of the
Reader, I have to say that I was struck by something you mentioned in the introduction: how terrible the readily accessible translations
of many
of these
documents are.
There is a lot
of repetition in the social
documents of the magisterium, partly because there seems to be an unwritten assumption on the part
of later popes, a slightly odd one if you ask me, that none
of their
readers has bothered or will bother to read the earlier stuff, so each pope needs to spend a lot
of time summarizing everything that came before.
Our task as
readers is to remember and serve the intentions
of those communities
of faith who preserved these
documents, to nourish the conviction that they are authoritative in our lives today, and most important, to communicate their worth as resources for our lives.
No
reader of the New Testament can escape the impression that within the primitive Christian community, whose life the
documents reflect, an event
of incalculable magnitude had occurred, an event
of such magnitude that those who witnessed it could confidently believe that it was nothing less than God's supreme disclosure
of himself to men.
It is true that some more adventurous
reader and investigator, lecturing here in future, may unearth from the shelves
of libraries
documents that will make a more delectable and curious entertainment to listen to than mine.
Readers can't know to what degree the
document's apparent rubber - stamping
of the culture
of death was intended by its authors, or to what degree it simply follows from sloppy thinking and careless rhetoric.
Too often the essays treat the categories that define literature, and that enable us to talk about it critically, as though they were given with creation itself, and that all the general
