While often these conversations happen in the context
of dog bite incidents and aggressive behavior, it should be noted that this is also an issue for small dogs and that as a whole, we need to put greater emphasis on teaching responsible dog ownership — regardless of what type of dog people choose to have.
But their sentences sum up a huge frustration over the media reporting
of dog bite incidents and why experts in canine behavior are important resources vs just news sites or people without expertise.

In writing this article, I have reviewed the Seattle Animal Control Records, talked personally to the dogwalker, reviewed photos
of the scene, read various reports by Ms. Lynn on how she says the
incident happened, and consulted a
dog bite expert.

of the Diane Whipple case in San Francisco in 2001 [which involved
dogs of the Presa Canario breed, also known as Canary Mastiffs], I have not seen a single
dog bite - related fatality attributed to another breed
of dog that has generated the amount
of news attention given to
incidents that are reported to involve pit bulls.
Radio and TV talk show hosts sensationalize
dog bite incidents and pressure prosecutors to put every such
dog owner in jail, assuming that it must be the fault
of either the
dog or the owner.
It should be 100 % clear which category a
dog fits after any kind
of biting incident.
My study
of dog bite - related fatalities occurring over the past five decades has identified the poor ownership / management practices involved in the overwhelming majority
of these
incidents: owners obtaining
dogs, and maintaining them as resident
dogs outside
of regular, positive human interaction, often for negative functions (i.e. guarding / protection, fighting, intimidation / status); owners failing to humanely contain, control and maintain their
dogs (chained
dogs, loose roaming
dogs, cases
of abuse / neglect); owners failing to knowledgably supervise interaction between children and
dogs; and owners failing to spay or neuter
dogs not used for competition, show, or in a responsible breeding program.
In response to
dog biting incidents, laws are being passed to ban certain breeds
of dog.
There are many contributing factors to most
dog bite incidents, including poor breeding practices, inadequate socialization and training, health or behavioural issues, inadequate supervision and / or control
of the
dog.

dog owners who do not train their
dogs to obey, and who tend to spoil their
dogs, causing more aggression and bratty behavior; d.) undo most
of the important aspects
of your obedience training and leadership over your
dog, especially obeying around distractions and coming when called, and over time they teach your
dog to charge after other
dogs, animals and even people; e.) are hard to control once the
dog is at the end
of the line, and can get caught in the leashes
of other
dogs, increasing the potential for a
biting or attack
incident; f.) do NOT cause the
dog to get more exercise on the walk; g.) can cause a
dog to run away from you, because if you accidentally drop the leash handle, many
dogs will run from the plastic handle «chasing» them from behind and that could cause your
dog to run into traffic and die; h.) have resulted in injuries to
dogs and owners.
These types
of problems usually result in «owners» turning the
dog out on it's own, giving the
dog to the local pound, having difficulty with neighbors in noise control,
biting incidents, etc..

There is zero evidence that supports banning certain types
of dogs actually lowers
incidents of dog bites in the U.S. — zero.

dogs are less likely to be involved in
bite incidents as compared to other types
of dogs.
Interestingly enough, pit bull type
dogs do not get the highest billing on reports
of which breeds are most likely to be involved in
bite incidents or aggressive acts.
In fact, Staffies come 22nd in reported
dog bites in the UK and the majority
of these
incidents are crosses.

of BSL, points to its own research, culled from news reports
