As people from coast to coast celebrate the unofficial start
of summer this Memorial Day weekend,
dogs in animal
shelters across America are hoping that the beginning
of a new season will bring with it the start
of a new life
in a forever home.
Yet even with the explosion
of trafficking
in stolen
dogs and the shipments
of hundreds
of thousands
of foreign
dogs, many
shelters and rescues
across America are still empty.
Unfortunately many
of the pit bulls and pit bull mixes you would come
across in city
shelters or similar locations, have been bred, kept and trained as fighting
dogs, or were kept as guard
dogs by drug dealers to be aggressive to any humans other than their owners.
Not only is heartworm highly contagious, a positive diagnosis is incredibly time consuming and expensive to treat (Blumenfeld says the cost averages $ 600 for small
dogs and $ 2,000 for larger breeds), an unfair fact that often pushes these
dogs to the top
of the kill list
in many
shelters across the country
A study published
in the Journal
of the American Veterinary Medical Association, including 53 animal
shelters across the U.S., confirmed the high rate
of return
of microchipped
dogs and cats to their families, and the importance
of microchip registration.
But, with so much time, money, and energy put toward breeding and showing the perfect
dog,
dog lovers can't help but consider the millions
of pet - perfect
dogs in shelters and rescues

dogs that deserve the same accolades, the same loving devotion, as their perfectly - bred cousins.
