What's better documented is that
dogs with separation anxiety make up about one - out -
of - five [4], [5]
dogs seen at veterinary behavior clinics.
There's a surprising amount
of room for error when it comes to identifying
dogs with separation anxiety.
To clear up the confusion somewhat, let's look closer at the results
of a study comparing the behavior
of dogs with and without clinical
separation anxiety (SA)[12].
There really is no way to support such claims, but for those who have worked
with dogs that are supposed to have
separation anxiety only to find out later that these are nothing more than attention - getting tactics can truly attest to the presence
of simulated
separation anxiety in
dogs.
A high percentage
of older
dogs with separation anxiety tend to have been shelter
dogs or strays at some point in their life.
Not because I don't want other trainers to treat
dogs with separation anxiety, but because they understand that in terms
of expertise, Malena and her team can't be beat.

with the bored
dog who chews your shoes or the corner
of your couch).

with their owners, because they miss them and want to be near and out
of excitement they jump onto the furniture and sit
with their owner.
One
of my top goals is to spread hope about positive outcomes for
dogs with separation anxiety.
Again, the way you raise any
dog can result in a variety
of behavioral problems
with may include excessive barking, biting, and
separation anxiety.
It is often stated that these types
of mental exercises can help
with separation anxiety, though I can not personally attest to that, as that is a problem I have never encountered
with my
dogs.
So each time you are doing practice departures, you can use an associated cue or marker to signal this fact and then, once you have worked up practice departures to a time frame
of around one to two hours (during which most
dogs with separation anxiety typically have issues), you can use the cue during actual departures to function to «bridge» from practice to actual departures.
