Once the mixture had cooled, my mom would add about a cup
of dried raisins for chewy contrast, but these days I use dried tart cherries and / or chopped dried apricots.
I like fresh berries for the contrast of sweet - tart flavor plus they are a great source of Vitamin C or a blend
of dried raisins, dates and figs for their rich almost candy - like natural sweetness.

I've also tried making them with all kinds
of dried fruits — apricots, prunes, dates,
raisins.
I usually add a cup
of dried fruit, such as
raisins, or chopped dates, prunes, or figs, as well as a cup
of chopped nuts, such as walnuts, pecans, or almonds.
I like mine chock full
of walnuts and
raisins, but if nuts and
dried fruit aren't for you, feel free to leave them out.

Soak just a few
of them in a bit
of water overnight and they turn into this naturally sugary dream that's also high in fiber, potassium and believe it or not, they're lower in sugar than most all other

raisins (though I like those too).
