dyadic emotional flexibility in real - time (Butler 2011; Moore et al. 2013; Van der Giessen et al. 2015).
Dyadic conflict was rated on three separate
interaction tasks by two independent raters using a five - point Likert scale, with higher scores indicative
of higher levels
of observed conflict.
Furthermore, by performing APIM analyses (Olsen & Kenny, 2006), we more optimally utilized the
dyadic nature
of these peer
interactions.
In observation studies that investigated peer deviancy training among both boys and girls, female dyads engaged in deviant talk less often, and were rated as more mutual in the type
of talk (e.g., normative or deviant) than male dyads (Dishion, 2000; Piehler & Dishion, 2007), which stresses the importance
of assessing gender differences in
dyadic peer
interactions.
These differences may be understood in the light
of gender differences in peer relationships, indicating that female rather than male adolescents tend to spend more time in
dyadic interactions with their friends (for a review, see Rose and Rudolph 2006).
Further research should compare emotional flexibility
of parent - child dyads in different clinical groups (e.g., depression, anxiety, conduct disorder), as this would provide an even richer understanding
of whether different type
of disorders are characterized by similar (or distinctive)
dyadic emotion dynamics during
interactions, and such knowledge might inform and facilitate prevention and intervention.
Hence, findings add to the growing acknowledgement (Butler 2011; Granic 2005; Houben et al. 2015) that a focus on the real - time dynamic nature
of emotions, particularly
dyadic emotional flexibility, during parent - child
interactions is important for understanding anxiety disorders.
