If it becomes clear that we are going to
die, how do we do so free
of pain,
with dignity and love?
We've come a long way, but
with the Wii U's sales struggling to match those
of its main competitors and the oddity
of replacing a console after just three years
of shelf - life forthcoming, it might just be the perfect time to hang up our hats and let an old friend
die with grace and
dignity.
But this past week, a Quebec Superior Court justice ruled that key issues in the
Dying with Dignity legislation contradict provisions
of the Criminal Code
of Canada.

of ensuring that end -
of - life patients are provided
with care «that is respectful
of their
dignity and their autonomy,» establishes specific requirements for certain types
of medical assistance to
die.
At the federal level, on June 24, 2014, Senator Richard Di Natale released an Exposure Draft
of a bill — Bill for an Act relating to the provision
of medical services to assist terminally ill people to
die with dignity, and for related purposes (Medical Services (Dying with Dignity) Bill

The subject
of physician - assisted suicide was in the news today because one
of the champions
of Oregon's Death
With Dignity Act, Dr. Peter Goodwin,
died over the weekend at the age
of 83 «after using lethal chemicals obtained under the Oregon law.»
Bill 52 aims to ensure that end -
of - life patients are provided
with care «that is respectful
of their
dignity and their autonomy,» and establishes specific requirements for certain types
of medical assistance to
die.
The Carter case is not the end
of the
dying -
with -
dignity debate (any more than Rodriguez turned out to be); rather, it is only the beginning.
These rules are framed by a patchwork
of provincial and territorial legislation, such as Quebec's recent Bill 52 protecting the right to
die with dignity, not to mention the possibility that the federal government will follow up Carter
with a more narrowly tailored Criminal Code provision dealing
with assisted suicide outside the narrow exceptions set out by the Supreme Court.
