Finally, companion dogs

ear mites since the shape
of their

ears to become damp and allowing the area to be a breeding ground for

The first step
of treating a dog
with ear mites is to thoroughly clean the
ear.

with the naked eye, but your veterinarian can recognize the signs and symptom
of a
mite problem.

mites, can cause pruritus and inflammation on or near the pinnae, which can lead to head shaking and scratching and secondary otitis externa.12 Otodectes cynotis (
ear mites) are seen in up to 50 %
of otitis cases in cats and in 5 % to 10 %
of cases in dogs.1 Chronic cases
of Otodectes infestation may become secondarily infected
with bacteria or yeast.
For a pet
with localized demodicosis
of the
ear, the
mites may be seen when an
ear swab is rolled in mineral oil on the slide and the collected material covered
with a cover slip, just as is seen
with Otodectes cytology preps.
If they do invade, a confirmed case
of ear mites can be treated
with Neem or plain mineral oil.
The tiny
mites can be seen
with magnification, either directly in the
ear with an otoscope, or by examining a sample
of the
ear discharge under a microscope.
Many cats
with ear mites create small wounds on the backs
of one or both
ears, near the base.

with a disinfectant such as Benzarid, by thoroughly vacuuming the home, and by washing all
of a dogs belongings
with a liquid detergent.
