Current researches and theory that illuminate what we know of the power
of early emotional relationships and attachments to influence relationships into adulthood will be presented.
A recent and compelling study entitled Neurons to Neighborhoods, conducted by the Board on Children, Youth, and Families of the Institute of Medicine, calls attention to the importance
of early emotional development in young children.1 Based on a careful review of neuroscience and developmental research, it highlights compelling evidence that a child's earliest experiences and relationships set the stage for how a child manages feelings and impulses, and relates to others.
Further, early identification of delays in social - emotional competence may be especially important, as competence may play a key role in the longitudinal course
of early emotional / behavioral problems (Cicchetti, 1993; Masten & Coatsworth, 1995).
Studies in animal models have found convincing evidence for the critical impact
of early emotional experiences.
In this month's column, we examine aspects
of early emotional development that support later academic success.
One

of these three areas: (1) by using the mental health center resources to make their total pastoral ministry more effective in the
early detection
of problems; (2) by becoming more comfortable in the use
of their own style
of helping troubled people so that some crisis situations can be contained; (3) by using the rich resources
of social concern in the churches to attack the wider problems out
of which so many individual cases
of emotional disturbance arise.
The major aspects
of its message and its media style can be seen in
earlier fundamentalist movements, particularly in the distinctive style
of revivalist tent meetings,
emotional expressions, dramatic incidents, and vitriolic challenge.
Originally these feelings were the product
of lack
of adequate experiences
of emotional intimacy with loving, protective adults in
early childhood.
The most cogent psychoanalytic explanation
of alcoholism indicates that the
emotional damage involved probably occurred in the very
early life
of the person — during the period when the child's primary way
of relating to the outside world is oral.
The
emotional damage which underlies alcoholism seems to have happened at a very
early age, in many cases, and has been overlaid by many strata
of comparatively normal personality adjustment.
