The
parenting intervention consisted
of culturally tailored societal information combined with the Connect
parenting support program.24 The culturally tailored societal information was developed based on an
earlier finding from a qualitative focus group discussion.6 This part
of the intervention constituted the first part
of the program (2 sessions) and covered 3 themes: convention on the rights
of the child,
parenting styles (authoritarian and democratic

of social services work with children.

parenting style.43 The most common trajectories followed by female offenders tend to increase the odds that their children will follow in their footsteps.
The family unit is the primary context for providing the nurturance, resources, and opportunities essential for healthy development.7 Key
parenting skills associated with positive child outcomes in
early and middle childhood include warm, affectionate interactions that are responsive to children's needs («warmth»), firm discipline in terms
of the setting
of developmentally appropriate limits and expectations for children's behavior («control»), and an absence
of irritable, angry affect («irritability»).7, 8 These behavioral dimensions can be combined to classify a number
of «
styles»
of parenting.
Several widely - used
parent - report «checklist -

A second line
of research into family functioning has implicated «parental communication deviance,» a
style of communicating with offspring that is vague, fragmented, and contradictory.54, 55 Although
early studies
of this phenomenon were criticized on methodological grounds, 56 it was later reported that parental communication deviance and criticism / hostility predicted later psychosis among nonpsychotic child guidance attendees, 57,58 reflecting bidirectional interactions between psychopathology in the children and parental behavior.59 More recently, a Finnish adoption study found that children at genetic risk
of psychosis were more likely to become psychotic in later life if raised by adoptive
parents with communication deviance.60, 61
In relation to
parenting styles, evidence that the maturation
of EF during
early childhood is positively correlated with maternal scaffolding (e.g., Landry et al., 2002) is consistent with the notion that children learn self - regulation and many other aspects
of EF by internalizing skills that are conveyed through social discourse (i.e., routines, symbolic systems, and other cultural tools), especially skills that are verbally coded (Vygotsky, 1978).
Unresolved maternal stress may also make these women more vulnerable to developing a harsh
parenting style; thus
early intervention is critical to prevention
of CP [32, 96].
