does the typical self - published author with two
ebooks on Amazon stand to benefit from
selling his books through his own website, also known as the online equivalent
of setting up a sales booth from the back
of their car?

If you only plan to
sell ebooks of your children's titles, and you only plan to distribute to trade
ebook sites, then you don't need ISBNs.
I can tell from first experience, even after
selling 1600 copies in a month the earning doesn't constitute a «living», especially because readers hardly buy an
ebook priced over $ 3.99 unless you are one
of the big names.
I don't know
of one author that we haven't reverted when the license was up, assuming we were out or low on stock and only
selling minimal amounts
of ebooks.
My experience is that the vast majority
of ebooks being
sold are novels... So, all those features don't really make a hill
of beans difference.
Publishing industry statistics from Nielsen, Bowker, et al who all rely purely on counting ISBNs are completely blind to this fact because
of the simple reason that 37 %
of all
eBooks sold on Amazon.com each day
do not have an ISBN.
I self publish as a hobby, as I always have
done, but it is becoming less and less fun now as the market has become saturated with rubbish from all forms
of publishing and the techniques being used now to
sell ebooks has become so intertwined with social media and spamming that any literary sense has gone out the window.
I don't know that they'll ever come out with one that's compatible with all
ebook stores until someone invents one independently
of also
selling books.
It would seem that Amazon is not content with controlling more than 50 %
of the
ebook market they also want to control the reviews and thereby control which writers
sell and which don't.
Analysts in 2007 (if memory
does not betray me) said that to be profitable Amazon had to
sell an
ebook at not less than $ 1.63 and Jeff Bezos announced only in 2012 that the volumes sales
of ebooks finally turned the business into a profitable one.
Step three, top
selling authors realize that if Amazon
sells half
of their books already, and 80 %
of their
ebooks, and Amazon will pay them triple to five times more than their publishers
do, then thay can make more money on Amazon right now.
The biggest «publisher»
of self - published material by far is Amazon KDP, and, as noted above, it doesn't require or issue ISBNs for the
ebooks it
sells.
There are so many schools
of thought on this topic, and essentially with little overhead, pricing an
eBook at 99 cents and
selling exponentially more than at $ 2.99

of the Harry Potter digital
ebooks, but it also has an online world for Harry Potter fans to explore.
Statistically they don't
sell a copious amount
of eBooks, recently leaked investor slides show that in North America they are listed in the «other» category, which represent less than 4 %
of eBook sales.
While
ebooks did account for a substantial portion
of his
sells, he was still vastly outselling in print.

I don't know why anyone in their right mind would rather

ebooks priced between 2.99 and 9.99, and lowers that royalty for
ebooks priced beneath and above that range.
Audiobooks are certainly a growing market in Germany, but don't expect to
sell very many
of them if your
ebooks aren't even
selling yet either.
Some
of this is sunk cost, some is ongoing, but unless you believe (as I
do) that for now the best way to
sell ebooks is to give them away in order to increase print - book sales, then there's no good reason to charge these costs to the
ebook's balance sheet.
Suddenly the future
of publishing, and the process
of writing and
selling ebooks, seems less stark than it
did just days ago.
1) Produce lots
of titles to increase name recognition and sales overall; 2) Lower your price point and the readers will follow; 3) Don't worry about pricing, just focus on great writing; 4) Be a guest blogger, have your own blog, tweet, join forums, talk to readers, get reviews; 5) Use your
ebook as a promotional piece to
sell classes, services, and other products; 6) There is no magic bullet, just keep
doing everything and eventually you'll break through.
Most MG authors will tell you they
sell as much (or more) in print as they
do in
ebook, but it's hard to move large numbers
of print copies if you're not in bookstores (and with POD prices high relative to mass market print runs).
