To be sure, it is unlikely that the effects
of ecological degradation in our time, though enormous, will prove «apocalyptic» for human civilization within a single generation, even under conditions of capitalist business as usual.

ecological crises
of great importance are not, however, dealt with here: species extinction (and loss
of biological diversity in general), deforestation, desertification, soil

of toxic wastes (including in living tissues), market - regulated biotechnology, urban congestion, population growth, and animal rights.
Despite Blomqvist et al.'s reservations, Footprint results show that: (1) most countries are in
ecological deficit, increasingly dependent on potentially unreliable trade in biocapacity; (2) humanity is at or beyond global carrying capacity for key categories
of consumption, particularly agriculture (factoring in soil loss and ecosystem
degradation would reveal additional deficits); (3) global carbon waste sinks are overflowing; and (4) the aggregate metabolism
of the human economy exceeds the regenerative capacity
of the ecosphere (and the ratio is increasing).

Ecological Internet have launched a campaign leading to Copenhagen's climate talks in December to ensure carbon based funding for forest protection — called avoided deforestation, or Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and
Degradation (REDD)-- remains ecologically and socially rigorous, or does not proceed at all.
Key causative pathways from physical drought to the
degradation of ecological, economic, and social health remain poorly understood and quantified.
While we applaud these efforts, which can ease
ecological stress in the short - term, minimizing environmental
degradation is not a strategy for real change, nor does it offer an inspiring vision
of success.

ecological degradation and a worsening
