of electrical sensors in monitoring the health of turbine blades and were experimenting with optical sensors because of their sensitivity to temperature and strain.
Some people with rare brain diseases, however, already have a grid
of electrical sensors implanted below their skulls, on their brains» surface.

electrical activity via 16 scalp
sensors, which the company claims allow recognition
of basic emotions and up to 30 specific thoughts, such as «lift this object,» «fire death ray,» or «fly forward.»

Now, an optical whispering gallery mode resonator developed by Penn State
electrical engineers can spin light around the circumference
of a tiny sphere millions
of times, creating an ultrasensitive microchip - based
sensor for multiple applications.
For example, University
of Maryland
electrical engineering researcher Mehdi Kalantari is designing a wireless early warning system made up
of tiny
sensors that can monitor a bridge's structural integrity and transmit that data to a central computer for analysis.
Semiconductor gas
sensors detect gas through reduced
electrical resistance due to gas molecules attached to the surface
of crystalline semiconductor materials.
«The
sensors are everywhere now, including in smart phones and other portable electronic devices,» said Alexander Balandin, UC Presidential Chair and professor
of electrical and computer engineering at UC Riverside, who is the lead researcher on the project.
«In fact,» Prof. Lugli explains, «the
