The Center for Biological Diversity, Center for Food Safety, the Xerces Society and monarch scientist Dr. Lincoln Brower
of Sweet Briar College filed a legal petition to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service seeking
Endangered Species Act protection for monarch
butterflies in late August.
Immediately it brought me back to childhood and a novel I read about the
endangered Fender's blue
butterfly in the Douglas fir forests
of southern Oregon, a story about the clash between environmentalists and the logging industry over
endangered species and their habitat, (a fictional story so I'm not sure how entirely accurate).
Grants have helped conservationists save
endangered butterflies, expand habitat for honeybees and educate children about the importance
of pollinators and how they can help protect them.
In April, a team
of scientists hatched a daring plan to save some
endangered mission blue
butterflies from a Milagra Ridge site ravaged by a plant pathogen.
Lupine (named for the unassuming host plant
of the
endangered Mission blue
butterfly) is a first - year Red - tailed Hawk trapped, tagged, and outfitted with a transmitter on September 7, 2014, in the Marin Headlands.
One
of the first invertebrates to be protected under the
Endangered Species Act, this quarter - sized
butterfly is an important resident
of area grasslands.
However, it is perhaps best known as the home
of the extremely
endangered Brenton Blue
Butterfly.
Students accomplish a variety
of restoration projects, from planting natives to monitoring habitat for the
endangered Mission blue
butterfly at Milagra Ridge and Mori Point.
It's mission blue
butterfly season in the Golden Gate National Parks, and you can catch a glimpse
of this
endangered species at Milagra Ridge.
Located just north
of the Golden Gate Bridge, the silver lupine (Lupinus albifrons) population found within the grassland supports a colony
of endangered Mission Blue
butterflies.
Look out for the variety
of wildlife and plant species at Fort Baker, including the
endangered Mission Blue
butterfly and its host plant, the silver lupine.
The first phase
of the Hawk Hill / Battery Construction 129 Restoration and Trail Improvement Project was recently completed with the restoration
of approximately six acres
of coastal scrub and prairie vegetation, to create improved habitat for declining bird populations and the
endangered Mission blue
butterfly, and the preservation
of the historic resources at Battery Construction 129.
Hike the trails in and around Fort Baker — home to the
endangered mission blue
butterfly — and take in spectacular vistas
of the bay and the Bridge.
