of the student volunteers.
These developments illustrate a fundamental issue that most common law jurisdictions will need
to address as they turn, increasingly,
to consensual dispute resolution («CDR») processes like mediation and JDR in an effort
to enhance access to justice in an environment
of fiscal restraint.
There are many roads

Over the last year or so, there have been a number
of developments that suggest the beginning
of a new era for ODR and an increasing recognition that ODR can be an important vehicle for
enhancing access to justice.
Whenever there is a conversation about using technology
to enhance access to justice for the poor, there is sure
to be talk
of A2J Author.
The idea
of using technology
to enhance access to justice is nothing new.
In a move aimed at
enhancing access to justice, the Legal Services Corporation announced today that it is partnering with Microsoft Corporation and Pro Bono Net
to develop state legal portals
to direct individuals with civil legal needs
to the most appropriate forms
of assistance.

access to justice as a strategic objective underpinning all
of the Law Society's work, which will include: (i) designating appropriate resources
to enhance the Law Society's approach
to developing
access to justice objectives integrated across program areas; (ii) strategically reviewing, reconsidering and, where appropriate, amending the Law Society's rules, regulations, policies and practices

What I detected at the Policy Day was a general feeling among Ontario lawyers (certainly in the break out group I attended), that any rule change that results in an increase in the number

enhancing access to legal services and the
justice system, «We will be accountable for collaboration with other partners in the

to defend the defenseless, fulfilling his professional obligation and offering steadfast support
to enhance access to justice for all in pro bono representation
of impecunious accused persons under the auspices
of the Legal Assistance Scheme for Capital Offences (LASCO) and the Criminal Legal Aid Scheme (CLAS).
