Briefly, an extreme low - carb diet can create a glucose deficiency, especially if endurance exercise or infection increases glucose requirements, and glucose deficiency invokes the body's glucose conservation measures, which primarily consist of lower T3 and higher rT3 hormone levels — two hormonal markers
of euthyroid sick syndrome.
«One - year prophylactic treatment
of euthyroid Hashimoto's thyroiditis patients with levothyroxine: is there a benefit?»
Most
of our euthyroid patients who improve or recover with metabolic rehabilitation involving T3 therapy meet these four criteria.
We find that approximately 75 %
of euthyroid FMS patients markedly improve or completely recover when treated with what we term «metabolic rehabilitation.»
Interestingly, a study from the Drug and Alcohol Dependence confirmed the existence
of euthyroid sick syndrome [iii] where alcohol - dependent persons can have low levels of T3, high levels of reverse T3 or rT3, and normal levels of the T4 hormone.
However, clinical data show that 95 %
of euthyroid patients fall in the range 0.4 - 2.5 mIU / L.

In this study, the serum levels
of vitamin B12 and folic acid were measured in 48 hyperthyroid patients and some
euthyroid subjects.
«In conclusion, our results in males and postmenopausal females with T - Abs and
euthyroid show an association between thyroid autoimmunity and increased levels
of Lp (a)»
Lastly, the effect
of iodine in Hashimoto's is most dramatically demonstrated by a study by Yoon and colleagues (2003), where 78.3 %
of patients with Hashimoto's regained
euthyroid status (reversing their Hashimoto's thyroiditis) after three months
of restricting iodine to less than 100 micrograms / day (versus 45.5 % who recovered in an iodine non-restriction group)(24).
However, in
euthyroid patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis, this escape phenomenon from the inhibitory effect
of iodine is impaired, resulting in subclinical or clinical hypothyroidism (10).
Three
of the seven who were subclinically hypothyroid became
euthyroid again when iodine treatment was stopped.
Consequently, in the presence
of such conditions, the TSH is a poor indicator for peripheral thyroid levels and a normal TSH should not be considered a reliable indicator for an individual being
euthyroid (normal thyroid), especially in the presence
of symptoms consistent with thyroid deficiency.
In interpreting these test results, I think it should be recognized that the various individual issues — such as the iron deficiency anemia, the high anion gap metabolic acidosis, the «
euthyroid sick syndrome» pattern
of low T3 thyroid hormone (see my post «Carbohydrates and the Thyroid,» Aug 24, 2011), and the low cortisol with a disrupted circadian pattern — are probably reflections
of deeper problems caused by malnutrition (starvation
of carbs, protein, and assorted micronutrients) despite excess fat intake (a source
of metabolic stress).
While doctors in the know have long known about the impact
of thyroid hormones on mood, new research is showing that the presence
of thyroid antibodies — even in
euthyroid Hashimoto's — can be associated with symptoms!
Furthermore, positive associations between TSH and LDL as well as total cholesterol levels have been found in cross-sectional studies in
euthyroid healthy subjects, and the strength
of these associations seems to depend on an individual's insulin sensitivity. We therefore hypothesize that the KD has diminished the production
of T3 from T4, thereby reducing the number
of LDL receptors and thus reducing LDL particle clearance which might be further impaired due to the missing stimulating effect
of insulin on LDL uptake into cells.
METHOD: A collective
of 375
euthyroid subjects without relevant goiter received daily doses
of 200 micrograms iodide, weekly doses
of 1.53 milligrams iodide, or no medication.
CONCLUSIONS: Despite affecting different types
of inflammatory cells, levothyroxine and selenomethionine exhibit a similar systemic antiinflammatory effect in
euthyroid females with Hashimoto's thyroiditis.
Iodized oil (1 mL) was administered intramuscularly to 40
euthyroid patients with nontoxic goiter, adequate iodine intake, and absent or normal levels
of ThAbs.
We conducted a randomized clinical trial involving a group
of 170 ambulatory
euthyroid women with recently diagnosed and previously untreated Hashimoto's thyroiditis and 41 matched healthy subjects.
In a study
of 33 Japanese patients with hypothyroidism, the median serum TSH level decreased from 21.9 mU / L to 5.3 mU / L (indicating an improvement in the hypothyroidism), and one - third became
euthyroid, when the patients stopped eating seaweed and other high - iodine foods for 1 - 2 months.
The process
of change with T3 therapy for
euthyroid fibromyalgia: a double - blind placebo - controlled crossover study.
Is
euthyroid before beginning the use
of T3, according to thyroid function test results, including a TRH stimulation test;
In conclusion, 78.3 %
of patients with hypothyroidism due to Hashimoto's thyroiditis regained an
euthyroid state iodine restriction alone.
Clearly, this set
of findings in many treated
euthyroid FMS patients shows that they meet Refetoff's definition
of thyroid hormone resistance: «reduced responsiveness
of target tissues to concentrations
of thyroid hormone that under normal conditions would be excessive».
Based on communication with Usala and other thyroid hormone resistance researchers, in 1990, my colleagues and I treated 77
euthyroid female FMS patients with the active thyroid hormone called T3 (as part
of more comprehensive metabolic treatment).
Results
of an open trial
of T3 therapy with 77
euthyroid female fibromyalgia patients.
We have written
of the suppression
of T3 thyroid hormone levels which is part
of the body's strategy for conserving glucose in times
of scarcity, and how this is a risk factor for «
euthyroid sick syndrome.»
Interestingly, it's been many years since the March 2001 issue
of the same exact journal, Thyroid, published a German study that found that the use
of levothyroxine treatment for cases
of Hashimoto's autoimmune thyroiditis where TSH had not yet elevated («
euthyroid») beyond normal range could reduce the incidence and degree
of autoimmune disease progression.
Relationship

euthyroid obese women.
In a review
of 14 trials, isoflavone ingestion in

euthyroid sick syndrome,» and has no known relationship to the development
of clinical hypothyroidism in dogs.
Ideally, laboratory tests including a minimum
of kidney values (BUN and creatinine) in conjunction with thyroid testing that shows a
euthyroid / close to
euthyroid status induced by treatment should be available to evaluate the effect
of an iodine deficient diet or methimazole treatment on kidney status prior to I - 131.
Peterson ME, Bilbrough GE, Rishniw M. Validation
of an in - clinic point -
of - care immunoassay for measurement
of total thyroxine (T4) concentration in serum from
euthyroid and hyperthyroid cats.
Because only the unbound fraction
of serum T4 is biologically active, measurement
of free T4 has been hypothesized to be more useful to differentiate
euthyroid dogs from hypothyroid dogs than total T4 concentrations.
The main purpose
of treating congenital hypothyroidism is to keep the patient in an
euthyroid clinical condition, providing thus normal growth, adequate psychomotor and pubertal development.
