Along with gorgeously restored prints
of «Apocalypse Now» and «Apocalypse Now Redux» on Disc One, presented in 1080p in their original 2.35:1 aspect ratios and new 5.1 DTS - HD
audio tracks (not to mention a commentary by director Francis Ford Coppola), the third disc contains the
excellent 1991 documentary, «Heart
of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse,» this time with Coppola providing commentary alongside his wife Eleanor.
All three
of these
audio tracks sound crisp and well - mixed, and the English dub is especially commendable for the
excellent vocal nuances
of its ADR cast.
Three separate
audio commentaries, all
excellent, offer a different perspective on the value
of these films.
Featuring both 2.0 and 5.1 Dolby Digital
audio mixes, the latter demonstrates a nice depth
of field, including some
excellent rear - channel effects and a throaty rumble from the subwoofer.
Though the DVD could benefit from some extra features, the video and
audio presentation
of the film is

The film itself receives a welcome (though short
of excellent) anamorphic transfer and a solid (but not the most dynamic)
audio presentation.
The video transfer is in crisp 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen while
audio is provided in an
excellent and immersive Dolby 5.1 English dub (and here my qualification
of a «general» lack
of a western bias comes into play) that is, nonetheless, inferior to the Japanese - language 2.0 surround track, which features the original vocal talent who have, not including this film, logged over twenty - six hours
of finished time voicing these characters.
The video transfer is beautiful, and the extras are
excellent, including insightful
audio commentary by Zemeckis, Gale and Kurt Russell, a series
of radio commercials that perfectly reflect the times, as well as some local car commercials Kurt Russell appears in for the lot that the production actually shot on.
The perfect video is complemented by an
excellent 5.1 DTS - HD master
audio soundtrack, which presents the film's steady flow
of music capably and at a volume that is compatible with the crisp dialogue.
The
audio track sounds
excellent, with an amazing balance between the surrounds as this film is filled with screams and demonic effects
of all kinds.
