Written from a secular perspective, this book is refreshing in its respectful explanations of each religion described as it encourages us to focus on how each is intended to address and solve a different problem (e.g. overcoming sin vs attaining enlightenment), the role
of faith and works in each, the existence of any higher power, God, or gods.
The question of what God expects from us in terms
of faith and works is not as certain as some like to claim for the very reason given in your argument.
In the opening sections he laughed at the way in which the theme

At the time of the Reformation there is not doubt that both Luther and his Roman Catholic opponents thought that his formulation
of faith and works was in contradiction with theirs.
