BASES - Job Vacancies from the British Association of Sports and Exercise Sciences Defence is now tackling chemical pollution from the widespread use
of firefighting foam at no fewer than 18 of its bases.
Although phased out in 2002, PFOS has been a key ingredient in the types
of firefighting foam used at the base for emergency response and training exercises.
New York in August declared Stewart Air National Guard Base a state Superfund site, with historic use
of firefighting foam the likely cause of the contamination.
State regulators blame the use
of firefighting foams at Stewart Air National Guard Base for the contamination and, in response, have funded Newburgh's purchase of water from New York City and a new filtration system designed to eliminate PFOS from water.
The study was part of the Defense Department budget because perfluorinated compounds have contaminated groundwater wells on and near military bases across the country, primarily through the use
of firefighting foams.

Preliminary data suggest the contamination is the result
of the historic use
of Class B
firefighting foam at Stewart Air National Guard Base, according to the DEC's press release.
The initiative would not only increase the cap but also would upgrade geographically specific spill response plans for state and federal officials, establish a state liquid
firefighting task force that would be in charge
of deploying flammable liquid
firefighting foam and other supplies along rail lines across the state and provide more training for local fire crews who would often be first responders to spills.
The chemicals are used in industrial manufacturing
of non-stick goods, including food packaging, furniture, cookware and
firefighting foam.
Heitzman says the Newburgh PFOS contamination is in a different watershed and comes from Stewart Air National Guard base, where there were releases
of highly concentrated
firefighting foam from storage tank leaks and training exercises.
On Sunday,
firefighters with the Minnesota Interagency Fire Center reported that the fire appeared to be out after they poured thousands
of gallons
of water and
foam down the shaft, according to a release on the Fermilab Web site.
Past use
of PFAA - containing
foams, such as those employed in
firefighting training, may account for the higher levels, the researchers suggest.
It's a tremendous mess and while the Air Force, Navy, and the Department
of Defense are endeavoring to clean it up, the military continues to use PFC - containing
firefighting foam for emergencies and training, notes Lerner.
In December
of 2013, the small Swedish town
of Ronneby discovered elevated levels
of PFOS in the drinking water, also linked to
firefighting foam.
