Samsung's president of mobile business Koh Dong - jin has confirmed that the South Korean phone maker is planning to launch a foldable smartphone in 2018.

It's understandable why Apple might want to keep Samsung out of its foldable phone business, especially in light of rumors about the Galaxy X. That's the reported name of the foldable phone that looks likely to appear in 2018 after years of rumors that Samsung was on the cusp of releasing such a device.

The Galaxy X brand is believed to be the South Korean phone maker's rumored foldable smartphone, with a few possible sketches of the Galaxy X having been recently spotted in the database of KIPRIS showing one of Samsung's patent applications for a foldable smartphone.

The foldable design could allow Samsung to use larger displays on its phones, especially since the South Korean company has recently unveiled a prototype of a rollable OLED screen at the SID 2016 event in San Francisco.

The idea of a foldable phone isn't new to Samsung, in fact way back in 2011 the company showed off a prototype of exactly that.

However, more recent rumors stated Samsung is still on track to release a foldable phone in the second half of 2016.

But apparently prototypes of the folding phone have already been shown off behind closed doors at CES 2018, which took place in January, while Samsung's Q4 2017 financial results included claims that foldable OLED panels and phones could be a big money - maker for Samsung in 2018 and beyond - which is yet more evidence that the Galaxy X is coming soon.

Should this work out, all ideas that it will learn during the testing period will be used in the creation of its foldable phone.

This year, we'll finally get to see some sort of foldable phone, and of course, it comes from Samsung; no other company can build, market and sell a phone like the Galaxy X. I'm not sure how successful it will be or how many people really want a phone that folds in the middle, but I do know the Note used to be that phone where Samsung takes chances, and now it's the Galaxy X.

On Wednesday, Patently Apple reported that Samsung is launching a «foldable phone» in China at the end of this month.

Meanwhile, Samsung is said to be gearing up for the launch of its highly anticipated foldable phone in 2018.

That means companies like Apple and Samsung need to already be thinking about how phone displays can be enhanced next, which is precisely where the idea of foldable screens comes in.

According to CNBC, the only info people are working off of is one quote from BoA analyst Wamsi Mohan, who said, «Our checks also suggest that Apple is working with suppliers on a foldable phone (that potentially could double up as a tablet) for launch in 2020.»

Rumors of a foldable phone from Samsung have been circulating in one form or another for years, and other manufacturers have been working on their own OLED displays that can bend, fold and scroll.

This year have been a year of big bezel-less phones and in the coming years, we will see bezel-less as well as for foldable smartphones.

The Galaxy Note has always been more experimental and adventurous in the technologies it adopts, and the notebook style of a foldable phone seems to be a perfect fit for a «Note» phone anyway.
