THE DRAWING CENTER «Exploratory Works: Drawings From the Department of Tropical Research Field Expeditions» sets the scene with old magazine articles and comic books; imaginative field - station re-creations by Mark Dion; a few tagged animal corpses as neat and compact as folding umbrellas; and a palmetto fan taken undersea in his bathysphere by the celebrity scientist William Beebe (1877 - 1962), whose field work is the subject of this exhibition.

Pollock was obsessed with an article Graham had published in 1937 in The Magazine of Art titled «Primitive Art and Picasso,» which he kept folded up in his wallet and reread constantly.

All are subjected to a voracious appetite for the pleasures of active misinterpretation, for the texture of paper, for sex and for the way the contours of an exposed vagina may mirror those of a stack of paper folded into a magazine, for the art of others and for the warmth of human skin.

These works are composed of pages from the magazine, cut with one single artistic gesture, and then folded together to hold them in place.

Gaillard sifted through copies of the magazine from the past fifty years, selecting individual pages from various issues, and bringing these disparate pages together to create a geographical map within the confines of each folding on view.

Although its innovative format ultimately proved unsustainable (the magazine folded after just 10 issues), Aspen is still regarded as one of the most innovative publications of its time.

Precedents come from fine art, design, craft, and mass media including paper architecture, paper airplanes, paper dolls, origami, Mad Magazine fold - outs, exploded machine diagrams and pie charts, Fluxus mail art, the Surrealists» Exquisite Corpse games, and even the complex systems of workshops and apprentices of the Renaissance.
