The
glacial streams descending through the depressions among the mountain slopes constituted the usual lines

glacial runoff contributes only about 4 % to the total annual
stream flow
of the Ganges system; the great majority is contributed by monsoon rains.
Data from modern ice
stream beds are difficult to obtain, but where ice advanced onto continental shelves during
glacial periods, extensive areas
of the former bed can be imaged using modern swath sonar tools.
