Shortly after the tragic shooting events in Newton, Connecticut late last year, a newspaper serving suburban communities just outside New York City decided to publish on its website a map
of gun permit holders.
In my capacity as the Rockland County Clerk, I write to request that your newspaper remove the interactive map and any information which depicts the names and addresses
of gun permit holders in Rockland County from your website located at www.lohud.com.
In late December, the White Plains - based Journal News had infamously published the home addresses
of gun permit holders, including thousands of police and other law enforcement.
Joining Nulty and the County of Rockland Tuesday evening, the Orangetown Town Board publicly criticized the gun map of the Rockland County Journal - News, saying the newspaper's recent publishing of a map listing the names and addresses
of all gun permit holders endangers the lives and safety of all police, correction, undercover and investigative officers, from local town and village departments to federal security agencies.

The various pieces
of legislation championed by New York Legislators for
Gun Violence Prevention would strengthen background checks, close loopholes for out -
of - state

of certain domestic violence offenses from buying
guns, among other measures.

permit holders, by - and - large, we find the legislation does little more than negatively impact lawful
gun ownership; and
The interactive map and any information published by your newspaper on the website deprives
gun permit holders in Rockland County the opportunity to avail themselves
of this statutory right.
The importance
of this statutory prohibition in the SAFE Act is to allow
gun permit holders and applicants for licenses to have a fair opportunity to request an exemption from the release
of their names and addresses from the application before it becomes a public record.
Also, please refrain from any further disclosure
of information about
gun permit holders in Rockland County during the one hundred twenty (120) day period or until my office has an opportunity to furnish your newspaper with an updated list, through FOIL, consistent with the law.
