Gundogs, also called bird dogs, are a category
of dog
breeds developed to assist hunters to find and retrieve game, usually birds.
Even though other
breeds had specific occupations in the service
of man, they are not known as working
breeds: sighthounds running down prey or predators,
gundogs flushing food for the table, terriers and toys terrorizing vermin — these were more or less doing what they would do without human ownership, anyway, so their jobs were considered less like «work.»

Setter
breeds are classified as members
of either the Sporting or
Gundog Group depending on the national kennel club or council.
Undoubtedly, both hounds and
gundogs are in the
breed's ancestry for there was an old practice
of mating these together to produce a dog capable
of pointing, but with more stamina.
Lots
of puppies love to play fetch, especially those from the
Gundog breeds whose ancestors were selectively
bred for their desire to retrieve.
For example, dogs which are working (
gundogs, hounds, terriers, police, sheepdogs, sled dogs etc) have higher energy needs than pet dogs
of the same
breed type, size, sex and age.
It is a
gundog and still used in
gundog trials and by some gamekeepers, however the rise
of the labrador retriever meant that the
breed decreased in popularity as a
gundog in the 20th century.The tight curly coat is waterproof and shakes dry quite satisfactorily - it was purposely developed for retrieving game from water.
By 1940, Barnes had resigned from the Rhodesian Parent Club and prompted by the lobbying
of a newer generation
of leadership within the Rhodesian Parent Club, in the 1950s, the
breed's group classification was changed from «
gundog» to «hound».
This is one
of the few hunting
breeds that can perform virtually all
gundog roles.
I had a Springer Spaniel called Boots he was from a line
of champion
gundog winners he loved to chase rabbits and birds because thats what he was
breed to do But he lived and played with cats all his life and when I got my first rabbit Caramel he absolutely doted on thet bunny even the cats learnt to live in harmony with Caramel mind you that was one tough bunny he would chase other cats out
of the garden growling, so there you have a prey animal living happily with animals with high prey intstinct, and Boots would still chase strange cats out
of the garden too, but the funniest thing to see was a big cat clear a 6 foot fence all poofed whilest being chased by a dwarf belgian lop rabbit, xx Rachel
