of our opportunities to study, understand and appreciate nature.»
Reducing those threats could buy the
honeycreepers some time to adapt to the growing threat
of disease.
All six are
honeycreepers, and four are now found only in small, remote parts
of the plateau.
«The Hawaiian

of adaptive radiation in animals, second only to Darwin's finches,» she says.
Hawaiian
honeycreepers are a marvel
of evolution.
Meanwhile, Floyd Reed, a biologist at the University
of Hawai'i at Mnoa, has been working on a different kind
of drive system called underdominance to prevent the Culex mosquitoes introduced to Hawaii from spreading avian malaria to endangered birds, including the Hawaiian
honeycreeper.

of adaptive radiation can be found in: the Galapagos finches, Australia's marsupials, Hawaii's
honeycreepers and fruit flies, Madagascar's carnivores and other mammals, New Zealand's birds and the prehistoric flying pterosaurs.
The settlement capped a decade - long effort by the Center's scientists, attorneys and activists to safeguard 1,000
of America's most imperiled, least protected species including the walrus, wolverine, Mexican gray wolf, fisher, New England cottontail rabbit, three species
of sage grouse, scarlet Hawaiian
honeycreeper, California golden trout, Miami blue butterfly, Rio Grande cutthroat trout, 403 southeastern river - dependent species, 42 Great Basin springsnails and 32 Pacific Northwest mollusks.
Instead
of needing to spend years developing cultured cells, the foundation to this work is breeding birds in captivity — something already up and running for many
of the world's rarest birds (e.g. Kakapo, Attwater's Prairie Chicken, various Hawaiian
honeycreepers).
Problem Hawaii has the highest number
of endangered birds in the US due in part to avian malaria, a parasite introduced into Hawaii that is causing disproportionate mortality in native forest birds, particularly
honeycreepers.

Managed by the Belize Audubon Society, the park is home to over 200 species
of native Belizean birds including the unusual exotic species
of slaty antwren, piratic flycatcher, red - legged
honeycreeper, tody motmot, and northern nightingale wren.
