of huckleberry bushes (related to blueberries), rhododendrons, a sprawling shrub called salal, currant bushes, elderberry bushes and even bonsai versions of other trees such as laurel, Douglas - fir, tan - oak and buckthorn.

of expired acai juice; 8 Parmesan rinds, and roughly five pounds

I'm going to Montana during
huckleberry season, though, so I expect that at least one more type
of berry will make an appearance.

The
huckleberry, a fruit commonly found in the Pacific Northwest, tastes like a combination
of blueberries and Concord grapes with a punch
of floral sweetness.
When we moved to Oregon, I was hoping we'd be able to catch more
of berry season — black raspberries, marionberries, boysenberries,
huckleberries, and other mystery berries I've never had before, but we missed it.
But
huckleberry buckle (or hucklebuckle, as I've been calling it) is a lot
of more fun to say than
huckleberry crisp, so
huckleberry buckle it is.
A wonderful coffee cake recipe made from fresh wild
huckleberries using maple syrup as a sweetener instead
of white sugar.
Celebrating the fruits and spices
of autumn, the new menu blends local ingredients from across the Pacific Northwest, including wild
huckleberries.
They have taken the concept
of comfort food and elevated it to be both healthy and indulgent with made - from - scratch items including the freshest ingredients, all with a local and unique flair, like the seasonal Montana
huckleberry salad.
There's no shortage
of weight, but it's also bright and floral, with a dusty quality, violets, fresh

The lovely space offers a delicious and nutritional selection

of froyo (mostly gluten - free) including
huckleberry, cookies and cream, pistachio, and, my personal favorite, pink lemonade sherbet.
In Montana, examples
of first foods and plants that are found in forests and open woodlands include camas (Camassia quamash), purple coneflower (Echinacea angustifolia), chokecherry (Prunus virginiana), red raspberry (Rubus idaeus L.),
huckleberries (Vaccinium spp.), kinnick - kinnick (Arcostaphylos uva - ursi), wood's rose (Rosa woodsii), wild strawberry (Fragaria virginiana), arrowleaf balsamroot (Balsamorhiza sagittata), and fireweed (Epilobium angustifolium), in addition to deer, elk, and other game.
Like the tamer blueberries they resemble, they're an excellent source
of antioxidants and fiber; if you find yourself at the festivities in Jay, order up a
huckleberry lemonade or smoothie to sip while watching the turtle derby.
In fact, one study showed that
huckleberry — also referred to as bilberry — was able to slow digestion
of starches, therefore lowering blood sugar.
Other nightshades include goji berries (the new darling
of the antioxidant crowd), ashwagandha (an adaptogenic herb from Ayurvedic medicine), Cape gooseberries (not normal gooseberries), ground cherries and garden
huckleberries (not blueberries).
I would also like to try some
huckleberries, which immediately makes me think
of Huckleberry Hound.
I had the slice
of the amazing
huckleberry - cherry pie and Eggs Benedict.
In spring and summer, look for wildflowers and wildlife, in the fall there's
huckleberries, and in winter lots
of snowy fun.
A bunch
of folks from our kitchen and I were at the farm one Saturday, picking
huckleberries for a winter jam to use in one
of our holiday flavors.
