A paper published this week in Astrophysical Journal, led by Open University academics, has examined the exact structure and behaviour
of the icy particles that collide and grow at the onset of planet - formation, in a series of revealing experiments at the UK's world - leading neutron source, ISIS.
Planets shrouded in clouds full
of icy particles, like Venus and Jupiter, for instance, are very reflective.

But these spacecraft still must squint through the second
of the sun's impacts, its bright illumination
of icy and dusty
particles around it, known as the zodiacal light.
Researchers will soon begin studying data from Cassini's gas analyzer and dust detector instruments, which directly sampled the moon's plume
of gas and dust - sized
icy particles during the flyby.
«The
icy small bodies warm up as they approach the Sun, and the ice sublimes to form a coma [a dense cloud
of gas and dust
particles around a nucleus] and often a tail, making the comets observable,» she explained.
One way to study the solar system's formative period is to look for samples
of small crystalline
particles that were formed at high temperatures but now exist in
icy comets.
On September 13 and 14, Cassini took a last look around the Saturn system's greatest hits, taking a color mosaic image
of Saturn and the rings, a movie sequence
of Enceladus setting behind Saturn, Titan and tiny moonlets in the rings that pull the
icy ring
particles around themselves to form features called propellers.
However, there were other possible sources
of water: interplanetary dust
particles produced by cometary activity and asteroid collisions,
icy rings, or one
of the 60 Jovian satellites.
Carolyn Porco, leader
of the Cassini imaging team, says the ring pictures may even help us figure out how Earth formed: «If we understand how
icy particles in the outer solar system behave, then we can refine our understanding
of how the early solar system formed from that same material.»
Icy volcanoes on Enceladus launch huge jets of gas and icy grains that contain fine particles of rock into spa
Icy volcanoes on Enceladus launch huge jets
of gas and

icy grains that contain fine
particles of rock into space.
More startling, Cassini found that Enceladus, just one - tenth the size
of Titan, is also active, venting water vapor and a spray
of fine
icy particles from cracks at its south pole.
What little rocky material occurs in today's ring system probably is the debris
of collisions between
icy ring
particles and asteroids and comets swept up by the planet's huge gravitational field, says Canup.
The temperature
of the stratosphere is one
of the key factors in the springtime depletion
of ozone above the Antarctic where in winter it gets colder than anywhere else on Earth, encouraging
icy particles to form in polar stratospheric clouds.
Chlorine monoxide, which is produced by a similar series
of reactions involving
icy particles in the stratosphere, is blamed for the springtime depletion
of ozone above Antarctica.
Saturn may produce the greatest number
of antiprotons because
of interactions between cosmic rays — energetic charged
particles from space — and the planet's
icy rings.
The finding implies the fine spray
of water vapor,
icy particles and simple organic molecules Cassini has observed coming from fractures near the moon's south pole is being fed by this vast liquid water reservoir.
False color Cassini image illustrating the jets
of fine
icy particles erupting from the south polar region
of Enceladus.
The disk is thought to be made
of icy dust
particles that have been warmed by the star which, according to Holweger et al (1999), tends to develop after most
of the surrounding nebulae
of gas has been absorbed or expelled from the developing star.
It also would be far easier to get a water sample from Enceladus, which has plumes
of water vapor, ice and
particles shooting more than 300 miles off its surface, than from other moons, such as Jupiter's Europa, where a massive ocean is believed to be buried beneath a thick
icy crust.
Astronomers found the river
of particles was significantly affected by Pluto, but only for short distances from the
icy sphere.
For example, Cassini discovered that the Saturn satellite Enceladus is a mini-world
of active jets — geyser - like phenomena that blast out water vapor and ice
particles from the huge, salty ocean that lies beneath the moon's
icy crust.
The scientists traced these
particles» origin to Saturn's E-ring, which lies between the orbits
of the moons Mimas and Titan and whose
icy particles are known to come from Enceladus.
Saturn's
icy 246 - mile - wide moon Mimas (near lower left) appears tiny by comparison to the planet's rings, but scientists think the all
of the small,
icy particles spread over a vast area that comprise the rings are no more than a few times as massive as Mimas.
Even today, they may be spewing ice from the moon's
icy interior into space, creating a cloud
of fine ice
particles over the moon's South Pole and creating Saturn's mysterious E-ring.
NASA's Cassini spacecraft discovered hydrogen in the plume
of gas and
icy particles spraying from Saturn's moon Enceladus.
Enceladus» southern polar region is also home to occasional jets
of water vapor and
icy particles (with traces
of carbon dioxide and monoxide, volatile gases, and hydrocarbons) that spew from vents within the moon's so - called «tiger stripe fractures,» which create a huge plume
of vapor and
icy particles that extends into space and affects Saturn's magnetosphere.
Using magic during combat also feels lackluster: unleashing an
icy bolt to freeze enemies doesn't feel like you're doing much more than throwing an ice - cube at someone who mildly annoyed you, while setting foes alight with your Nova attack involves you creating what looks like a pile
of gellatine at your feet before unleashing the attack which doesn't so much set fire to enemies as generate some weird
particle effects.
From the tall mountains and
icy lakes, to the
