But one theme that cropped up repeatedly in the shortlisting discussion
of the judging panel for the 2014 Art Fund Prize for Museum
of the Year was the very evident impact
of particular
individuals (be they
curators or directors) on the quality and originality
of what was being newly presented to the visiting public.
The Fishers collected in depth, often buying dozens
of works by a single artist, and for this first presentation the
curators have opted for concentrated displays
of individual painters, sculptors and photographers.
More than a dozen anonymous nominators participated, along with the following jurors: Susanne Ghez, director
of the Renaissance Society; Lane Relyea, art critic and professor at Northwestern University; Lisa Dorin, assistant
curator of contemporary art at the Art Institute

curator; and Nick Cave, artist and past winner

Organized in a collaborative effort between
curator Julie Fishkin, and artist Saya Woolfalk, the fifteen artists in the exhibition engage the dichotomy between communal pasts and the
individual experience, intertwining them visually through the manipulation
of common materials and reexamination
of time - honored aesthetic practices.
Andrea Lissoni,
curator of the exhibition, said: «Hypothesis can be considered an experimental model for a solo show, in which different existing works are recombined for just the duration
of the exhibition, becoming a temporary installation, and then getting back their
individual lives and status after the show itself has ended.
