With its exhibitions and events, the opening
of a
gallery in London's West End, together with the publication
of the influential Signals Newsbulletin, Signals became a centre
for experimental
international artists, with links formed between the avant gardes
of Latin America, Europe and London.
It was therefore able to build
international reputations
for contemporary artists in - house and the
gallery began to attract artists
of the standing
of Francis Bacon, one
of the first to sign an exclusive contract with Marlborough in 1958.
Originally the Tate collection was held at Millbank (now Tate Britain), but after the additions
of Tate Liverpool in the 1980s and Tate St Ives in the 1990s, the decision was made to create a second London
gallery specifically
for modern and
international art.
