food; teaching all children basic cooking skills; getting more gardens into schools; encouraging restaurants to ditch the standard breaded - and - fried children's menu; imposing taxes
on soda (and even
junk food); improving
food access; and so much more.
If you look at the anti-obesity policy recommendations
of almost every leading public health organization, the list invariably includes a ban
on junk food advertising directed at children.
With smoothies, fruit, and cheese kabobs and a savory mix
of crunchy bits
on the snack menu, your preschooler will quickly lose interest in the array
of unhealthy
junk food featured
on the supermarket shelves.
Because the current federal standards only prohibit «
foods of minimal nutritional value» in cafeterias during mealtimes, children still have access to
junk foods elsewhere
on campus.

But one concern I have here in my own district is the sale
of foods that look OK
on paper but are still what most
of us would consider
junk food, like Flaming Hot Cheetos that are baked, not fried, or Rice Krispie treats that are only 200 calories per serving.
