of the CHildhood Obesity Cost - Effectiveness Study (aka «CHOICES»),
which examined various possible approaches to curbing childhood obesity and chose two as most likely to help: the imposition
of taxes on sugary beverages and curbs on children's
junk food advertising, both measures long supported here on The Lunch Tray.

which we can expect kids to exercise their own judgment, bolstered by messages at home, though I still object at any grade level to the infiltration in schools
of Big
Food corporate interests, the sale
of junk by the school itself, etc..
It is true that school lunches (I'm a teacher) are terrible, full
of unhealthy
junk foods like Poptarts, chicken nuggets
of dubious origin (thanks Tyson) and Smart Waters (
which are anything but).
However sometimes I think it's just expensive
junk food, that we tell ourselves is better —
which it is, sort
of.

which highlights its marketing

Everyday we read or hear about unhealthy
foods -
foods like infant formula, processed / packaged industrially made infant
foods,
junk foods,
foods with high levels
of starch, transfats, highly processed
foods,
which increase our risk
of getting cancer, heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
Saturated and trans fats (
which are in a lot
of junk food) can alter the composition
of your breast milk and possibly harm the health
of your baby.
In its recent report, Still Too Fat to Fight, the nonprofit Mission: Readiness,
which is run by retired military leaders, found that roughly 25 percent
of young adults ages 17 to 24 are too overweight to qualify for military service and it targeted
junk food vending machines in schools as a contributor to this problem.
I recently came across an an open letter, published in the Journal
of the American Medical Association, in
which a doctor expresses dismay over the glut
of junk food his first grader is offered at school.
It would take an entire book to explain how flawed the NSLP has become, how, starting in the 1970s and 80s, the program morphed from an anti-hunger initiative into one in
which school districts were so starved
of cash by the federal government (thank you, Ronald Reagan) that school children came to be seen as «customers» whose palates must be pleased at all costs, with heavier reliance on
junk food a la carte sales and «carnival
food» menus.
Just think about it: if you were trying to balance a very tight budget in an operation
which lives or dies based on how well students accept your
food, and if many (sometimes, the vast majority)
of those students came from homes in
which nutritionally balanced, home cooked meals are far from the norm, and if the
food industry was bombarding those kids with almost $ 2 billion a year in advertising promoting
junk food and fast
food, and if you had no money
of your own for nutrition education to even begin to counter those messages, and if some
of those kids also had the option
of going off campus to a 7 - 11 or grabbing a donut and chips from a PTA fundraising table set up down the hall, wouldn't you, too, be at least a tiny bit tempted to ramp up the white flour pasta, pizza and fries and ditch the tasteless, low - sodium green beans?
I was appalled to find that more than half
of her pregnancy savers were either
junk food or medication, both are things
which your baby doesn't need during gestation.
Junk food sales,
which prey on our hardwired love
of sugar and fat, are a surefire way to raise money quickly and cheaply.

junk food to its school children.
The reality is that children need help learning what's good for them to eat, because
junk food (
which has lots
of calories, but little to no nutritional value) tastes great and is hard to resist, even for adults!
The historic rise in childhood obesity has absolutely nothing to do with: federal corn subsidies
which unnaturally render
junk food and fast
food the cheaper option for many consumers; the
food industry's intense focus on making
junk food hyper - palatable; the almost $ 2 billion spent each year to aggressively market
junk food to kids: the growing ubiquity
of junk food in outlets
which formerly never sold
food (Michael's craft stores, fabric stores, car washes, etc.); or a host
of other factors.
She laughingly told us something along the lines
of «This is where your kids can get all that
junk food they love,» to
which I could only think, «And why is that in any way funny?»
In connection with its report, the Daily Mail published this photo,
which purports to illustrate all
of the
junk food consumed by the average UK child in one year.
In the busyness
of the season, nutrition often takes a backseat to convenience, and an overload
of junk foods and sweets can cause tummy aches and crankiness
which won't help them or you to have a jolly holiday.
The
junk food diet also reduced the abundance
of microbial species capable
of metabolising flavonoids,
which have been suggested to not only assist in weight loss but also exert neuro - protective functions within the brain.
The constant grind
of stress may trigger a rise in the hormone cortisol,
which, in turn, helps make insulin levels go up and blood sugar drop (enter the out -
of - control
junk food cravings).
I tell my patients that they need to be smart about their nutrition instead
of relying on packaged and
junk -
food plant - based options,
which are guaranteed to leave you missing out on key nutrients.
Many people ingest caffeine via soda and energy drinks,
which are chock full
of things like aspartame, sugar,
food dyes and a lot
of other
junk.
She said she didn't need any sort
of diet at all and that she practically ate everything in sight,
which should put you at ease if you can't resist
junk food.
In a hurry to get a meal, people often turn to
junk food which is full
of sugars and trans fats.

One
of the things that I really liked about this book is that Jon focuses on whole unprocessed
food in its natural state, instead
of all
of the highly processed
junk that fills the grocery stores these days...
which coincides EXACTLY with my philosophy on
food!
The intake
of trans fats,
which come mostly from
junk food and animal products; saturated fat, mostly from dairy products and chicken; and cholesterol, coming mostly from eggs and chicken, should be as low as possible.
To make a long study short, they say that past comparisons
of food costs were flawed because they only looked at price per calorie; whereas, comparing cost per average portion is a better measure in their opinion, and one
which, incidentally, shows fruit and vegetables to be cheaper than most moderation (e.g.
junk)
foods.
The bottom line is that
food manufacturers want you to be addicted to sugar and continue to buy all
of their high profit
junk foods and sugary drinks
which destroy your health.
These cravings caused by stress are more often than not intended for
junk and sweet
foods which by and large are the key factors
of gaining weight.
Dairy, meat, eggs, and
junk foods all raise the activity
of the TOR enzyme,
which appears to be linked to obesity risk.
