After the Nazi regime closed down the Bauhaus in 1933, as part
of its campaign
of suppression
of «degenerate art» (entartete
kunst) Albers emigrated to America, and continued propagating the Bauhaus aesthetic in art and design at the experimental Black Mountain College, North Carolina, where he directed the fine art painting course until 1949.
During the pre-war years, the governors
of the Kunstmuseum decided to develop a major collection
of modern art, and took full advantage
of the opportunity in 1939 to purchase a large holding
of avant garde art - designated as degenerate art (entartete
kunst) by the Nazis.
After World War I, Justin Thannhauser assumed control
of the gallery, opening new branches in Lucerne (1919), and Berlin (1927), but the advent
of the Nazis and its campaign against so - called «entartete
kunst» (degenerate art) forced Thannhauser in 1937 to close the business and emigrate to Paris and thence to New York where he established himself as a private art dealer.
