SUNNY GAULT: So today we are talking of the importance
of lactation rooms for breastfeeding and pumping mommas while they are out in public.
I know it motivates me to want to support them, like because I feel they are on my team so to speak if they are going to stick their neck out there so they know a little bit in a way I feel like closer to them and I kind of want to support them a little bit more but Priya let's get your take on this a little bit, you know I know you are not breastfeeding or pumping now so you know, you couldn't have benefited of all the stuff is happening right now and the legislation but what is your take and I know you probably heard from moms too that are on the app and you know, they are reporting in and telling you about you know, these different types
of lactation rooms so other moms can find out about them, so what's your take on all of this?
Today we are talking of the importance
of lactation rooms and legislation to support it, we are The Boob Group.
Some of the lactation rooms provide a hospital grade pump, but because these rooms aren't always open, I rented my own backup.
A friend of mine on the other hand visits the Four Seasons
of Lactation Rooms every day at her company.
Not exact matches

They surf the Internet, go to classes where new moms congregate, visit chat
rooms and seek referrals from
lactation consultants — all to find a nursing mother who is producing too much
of a good thing and has some to spare.
In light
of which, Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D - N.Y.) ever abreast
of women's issues, has introduced legislation she hopes will encourage more businesses to provide
lactation rooms and pumping breaks.
Regardless
of the size
of your company if you want new working moms to transition well after maternity leave create a comfortable a safe place for them to pump breast milk by building a
lactation room or nursing
room.
Creating a
lactation room will better the chances
of the working mom to succeed at breastfeeding and improve her health and her child's.
I don't have a problem with
lactation rooms as long as women are not told that they must use them and as long as enough women keep nursing in public to help normalize it and help combat the images
of sexual breasts with images
of nourishing breasts.

But all that did, as I sat in a cold, dusty dressing
room in the basement
of my office building (since there was no law at that time dictating employers to provide private, dedicated
lactation areas), was make me sad.
Things like if you want your partner to cut the umbilical cord or if you want to delay cord clamping, if you plan on doing anything with your baby's cord blood, if you want to hold the baby immediately after they are born or after they are cleaned up, if you want their little footprints in a special book, if you want skin - to - skin with you or your partner, if you want to try and breastfeed immediately after delivery or have a
lactation consultant come (helpful especially for first - time moms), if you'd like your baby to stay in your
room as long as possible or get taken to the nursery (if your hospital has one) to be evaluated, and if you want your partner to go with your baby if they need any special care outside
of the delivery
room.
The day after my son was born, I shuffled down the hospital hallway to a small
room where an enthusiastic
lactation educator held a crocheted breast to a bizarrely disturbing doll's face and told the group
of bleary - eyed new parents that we should breastfeed for at least two years, per the WHO's recommendations.
Excellent postpartum support for mothers that starts right from the hospital; ample opportunities for
rooming in and bonding; precise support from
lactation consultants and nurses for newborns and mothers; the provision
of accurate and evidence - based information for parents to make informed choices
You can also pump in your car without driving (just sort
of use it as a
lactation room), or depending on your comfort level, you can try pumping in public.
Because I didn't hear about it when I was pregnant and had my babies, and if it's been around for a while obviously the hospitals that I gave birth in never made any mention
of it, so I'm assuming they weren't baby - friendly back then, but after I gave birth I knew that a
lactation consultant was going to go on to the, come into the
room, well actually at the first child you already know the rounds, you know, what's going to happen, you know, how long you're going to be there, all that stuff.
You can be a wonderful force
of change by raising the issue in a positive way and helping your employer set up a
lactation room that serves the needs
of the employer, employee and infants — both yours and those yet to be born.
Much
of the recent attention to pumping has centered on its politics, including laws requiring insurance companies to cover pump costs and corporations to provide
lactation rooms.

lactation rooms, and a work culture that treats pumping as an inconvenience?»
But the new law stops short
of offering tax incentives to businesses that provide
lactation rooms, as proposed in previous sessions by Erwin.
Under U.S. law, employers must give all nursing moms
of infants a reasonable break time and a
lactation room that is private and sanitary (no, not a bathroom).
Examples
of barriers to breastfeeding include placement
of the stable, healthy, full - term newborn on an infant warmer immediately upon delivery rather than skin - to - skin with the mother, provision
of infant formula or water to breastfed newborns without medical indication, removal
of the newborn from the mother's
room at night, inadequate assurance
of post-discharge follow - up for
lactation support, and provision
of promotional samples
of infant formula from manufacturers.
I did not know that, and it's a free thing and I went in this
room and a
lactation consultant runs it, but there's a bunch
of moms sitting there and they're all just chit - chatting, and my baby got the best feeding that day, because I was so busy talking to these new moms about everything, because we had things in common, so he got the best feeding»cause we were just sitting there for an hour or so and just chatting.
A group
of moms (eight
of them for this one shower stall) can't make it to the
lactation room in the time they have to pump.
Rooming - in, demand feeding, proper techniques
of attachment, positioning and expression
of breastmilk coupled with appropriate support to the mother is crucial to establishment
of successful
lactation.
All the well - intentioned advocates
of better breast pumps and more access to
lactation rooms should be aware that those policies actually promote more separation
of mom and baby, not less.

In my experience, one
of the greatest barriers to early nursing successes is a typical hospital birth (I can't speak for Israel, so I will speak for the US), which includes a surgical delivery for up to 40 %
of moms (depending on the hospital),
lactation consultants who work only on the day shift during the week, the refusal to allow babies to
room in with mom (and then not waking mom when baby wakes), not permitting moms to nurse babies with jaundice (based on what?)
All research shows that breast milk can clear Meconium faster than formula or
of course water so, it's, it's crucial it is truly medicine and that's why we even ask a mother who had no intention
of breastfeeding, if she had a baby go to the NICU

Lactation consultants are taught that breastfeeding is best for every baby, that formula supplementation and pacifiers harm the breastfeeding relationship, that insufficient breastmilk is rare, and that extended skin to skin contact and
rooming in are safe and improve the likelihood
of breastfeeding success.
Lactation consultant Edith Kernerman, president
of the International Breastfeeding Centre in Toronto, says the best way to increase milk production is to empty the breast regularly to make
room for more milk.

If you are one
of the lucky ones that has an available
lactation room and a job that you can do on a laptop while you pump with a hands - free bra, take advantage
of that to get as much pumping time in as possible while at work.
So when that first work trip as a pumping mom pops up on the calendar, it's totally natural to have a mini meltdown in the
lactation room tons
of questions.
