Barrington Park District officials have unveiled plans to alter the course of Lake Zurich Road through Jewel Tea Co. property along Northwest Highway and Lake Zurich Road.

The Park District closed the deal with Alan Hoffman, the major owner of the property, after a heated struggle between Cary and Lake in the Hills for control of the property, which abuts the burgeoning commercial corridor along Illinois Highway 31.

The property has been at the center of a battle between the two communities, a dispute prompted by comments from Lake in the Hills officials that they may be open to putting a gravel pit on the site west of Illinois Highway 31 and south of Rakow Road.

Lake in the Hills, earlier this year, had been feuding with Cary officials over the future of the property.

Because the property in question belongs to the county, the vote by the Long Grove Village Board is not binding, but will be introduced at the Oct. 21 meeting of the Lake County Forest Preserve District Board, during which the board is expected to vote on the proposal.

Jerry Sagona, Lake in the Hills administrator, declined to comment in any detail on the future of the property, partly because it is in litigation.

Lake in the Hills had annexed the property and discussed plans to turn a portion of it into a gravel pit.

The Crystal Lake Park District Board approved an annexation agreement Thursday night for a 235 - acre gravel pit east of the Lake in the Hills Airport that has the potential to become a big revenue producer once the property is rezoned.

Lake in the Hills still has possession of approximately 8 acres of land that Hoffman donated last year as part of an attempt to sell the entire 258 - acre farm to that municipality, which has a pending condemnation lawsuit against the property.

Most of the village is in Lake County, where property taxes are higher than they are in the Cook County section.

According to village officials, dozens of residents have complained about damage to their vehicles after hitting some of the potholes around the perimeter and throughout the property and parking lot at Lake Cook Road and Route 83 in Buffalo Grove.

«If the referendum [proposal] is approved, the first thing we'll do is fund a feasibility study to determine what to do with the property,» said Debbie Gallagher, assistant director of the Crystal Lake Park District.
