So here you have it kids, my review of what is one the Holy Grails
of laserdisc collection the extended, super-special edition of Peter Jacksons The Frighteners.
First things first, the 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer is soft and lacking in deep blacks, giving off the impression
of a LaserDisc image rather than a DVD circa 2003.
Extras are non-existent — I decline to consider a standard - def theatrical trailer that's been kicking around since the days
of LaserDisc an «extra.»
This DVD is essentially a rehash
of the laserdisc, and while the movie is not everyone's cup of tea, there is no reason that Disney couldn't have at least included a few extras or made the movie look nicer.
Universal's early DVD releases were either bare bones editions, containing just the movie and maybe a trailer, or special editions that duplicated the contents
of their laserdisc releases.
First Universal DVD of John Carpenter's THE THING replicates content
of Laserdisc, plus adds isolated stereo track of Ennio Morricone's score under the feature - length documentary.
This was one of the very first commentary tracks ever recorded and was unavailable to most viewers (there aren't a lot
of laserdisc players still spinning discs out there) until it was revived for the 2011 Blu - ray.
What do you get when you mesh an actress whose film career has seemingly gone the way
of the laserdisc player with...

Let me start by saying that if you own the original
laserdisc set or the VHS tape, you're going to have to hold on to your older copies
of the film.
This could be a result
of my equipment, but it's still another nail in the
Laserdisc coffin.

The print's speckling is fairly minor; any grain has a video - noise quality, not unlike Criterion's

Supplements for these platters are divided into two categories: «Bonus Features,» which are new and also appear on the current DVD, and «Classic DVD Bonus Features,» which is stuff that in some cases dates all the way back to the Deluxe Edition
LaserDisc of Toy Story but has become, in these latest reissues, exclusive - to - Blu - ray.
Mild, welcome grain helps maintain the persuasion
of celluloid, though, while saturation is strong and hues seem much more accurate than the pink tones
of the film's VHS and
LaserDisc incarnations.
Carpenter and Russell's
LaserDisc commentary from 1995 — their first yak - track together — is recycled here and deserves its legendary status, the only peril
of the yakker's reuse that the boys refer us to supplementary material that's no longer on board.

of the extras on the «Platoon» Blu - ray, such as the commentaries, date back to the amazing Pioneer Special Edition
laserdisc of 1995.
The Magnificent Ambersons radio performance comes from the super-rare Criterion CAV

Both incarnations tone down the edge - enhancement
of the sought - after
LaserDisc and offer a more variegated palette.

Unfortunately, this Blu - ray, which also includes the film on DVD and a code for a digital copy, doesn't include the extensive, 1.5 - hour making -
of documentary originally created by Laurent Bouzereau for the 1996
laserdisc release.
On the Pocahontas
laserdisc, there was a highly - praised audio commentary, a making -
of documentary with location footage, highlights
of the film's premiere in Central Park, a multi-language reel
of «Colors
of the Wind», and interviews from the filmmakers.

The 10th Anniversary Edition ports over most
of the deluxe
laserdisc supplements that were left off
of the first DVD.
The
laserdisc had a pinkish hue in some daytime scenes, and the excessive brightness muted the deep blue sky and saturation
of reds and deep greens (although in augmenting the overall colour contrasts, darker blacks and browns in the DVD obfuscate some subtle object and facial details).
The
laserdisc's box also contained an artist's portfolio and the book «The Art
of Pocahontas», are not included in some form.

The Short Cuts DVD retains most
of the original
laserdisc extras.
John Carpenter's legion
of fans won't be disappointed by this outstanding release, heavily improving upon the original Special Edition
laserdisc from New Line in 1995.
A title in Fox Video's «Family Feature» series (it was originally issued on tape and
LaserDisc by Warner Home Video), Thumbelina is presented in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen on one side
of the DVD and in pan-and-scan on the flipside.
Though released on VHS and
laserdisc in the nineties, it had been MIA on DVD, in large part because
of the deplorable condition
of the vault elements.
As on
laserdisc and DVD, Last Temptation is joined by a modest collection
of extras, less than you would expect for a film
of its reputation and for being Criterion's only Scorsese title.
Book - length film studies by amateurs can be traced back to Salman Rushdie's 1992 The Wizard
of Oz, the volume that launched the BFI Film Classics — possibly the most bountiful book series in the history
of film criticism in any language, and one that sums up some
of the gains criticism generally can boast over the same period, when DVD extras, building on the precedents established with
laserdiscs, started to become institutionalized.
As a home theater audio format, DTS (also referred to as DTS Digital Surround or DTS Core) is one
of two (along with Dolby Digital 5.1) that got their start with the
Laserdisc format, with both formats migrating to DVD upon that format's introduction.
There are superb Blu - ray and DVD special editions, including a new 40th Anniversary Blu - ray with a new cast and crew reunion Q&A and commentary by Martin Scorsese recorded for the original
laserdisc release
of the film: one
of the first commentary tracks ever recorded.
The 2002 DVD presented an abridged version
of Completely Cuckoo, a documentary created for a 1997
laserdisc release.
Originally found on the 1995
laserdisc, this program offers the standard mix
of movie clips, archival materials, and interviews.
In case this impression stemmed from the pan and scan transfer, I rented the letterboxed
laserdisc a few years later and felt the same way; Jaws 2 isn't a terrible movie, but it's nothing more than a pale imitation
of the original.
The Parent Trap first came to DVD in March
of 1999 and it concurrently debuted on VHS and
laserdisc.
THE ABYSS: Special Edition (A / A - / A +) From the excellent picture, very good sound and monumental complement
of extras, The Abyss is a DVD that effectively improves upon a solid
laserdisc set.
The disc's central supplement is the documentary «Doctor Zhivago: The Making
of a Russian Epic» (1:00:24), a program created for the film's 30th anniversary
laserdisc in 1995.
The film was shot by Glengarry Glen Ross cinematographer Juan Ruiz Anchía and looks it, with the stability
of his trademark sizzling reds pardoning the intermittent «
LaserDisc» appearance
of the image, i.e., an ineffably dated digital sheen.
The 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer will impress even the most jaded viewer, exhibiting stark blacks and whites that often suggest the silver retention process used famously in theatrical and
LaserDisc presentations
of Seven.
Jarmusch spoke eloquently about his love
of Janus film - makers like Bergman and Ozu, and even the significance
of the Janus logo, and he struck a resonant note for the assembled crowd
of cinephiles when he discussed his stash
of Criterion Collection
laserdiscs, even though his
laserdisc player is currently broken.
A making -
of documentary, The Hamster Factor and Other Tales
of Twelve Monkeys, is included on the
laserdisc release in 1997.
It was created for the movie's 1997
laserdisc and a shortened 47 - minute version appeared on Disc 2
of the 2002 Special Edition DVD.
