It recognises the four most common types
of cancer — prostate,
lung, colon and breast cancer — at a very early stage, namely when the level
of calcium in the blood is elevated due to the developing
tumour.
Commenting on the significance
of the research, Dr Pilar Garrido, head
of the Thoracic
Tumour Section
of the Medical Oncology Department at Ramón y Cajal University Hospital, Madrid, Spain, said: «
Lung cancer is the most common cancer globally, but debate about the optimal screening strategy is ongoing and current selection criteria are based only on age and pack - years.
We have developed pre-clinical models to identify genes, both in the
tumour cells and in the microenvironment that regulate the spread
of cancer to specific organs such as the liver,
lungs and brain.

of a
tumour, the activity
of neutrophils can be modified to support the spread
of cancer cells to other organs, such as the

Tracing
of lung metastasis following surgical removal

Her group has developed pre-clinical models
of metastatic disease that are used to identify genes, both in the

tumour micro-environment that regulate the process

In both early stage non-small cell
lung cancer and limited stage small cell
lung cancer, we found evidence
of a significant association between continued smoking and recurrence

of a second primary
tumour.
No study contained data on the effect
of quitting smoking on cancer specific mortality or on development

tumour in non-small cell

We reviewed 10 observational studies, all
of which showed some evidence that people who continue to smoke after a diagnosis
of early stage
lung cancer have an associated higher risk
of recurrence, second primary
tumour, or all cause mortality compared with those who stop smoking at that time.
Four studies reported estimates
of the association between continued smoking and all cause mortality, one study reported the association with occurrence
of a second primary
tumour, and one study with recurrence in non-small cell
lung cancer (fig 2 ⇓).

Despite these successes two major problems remain: first, the majority
of lung cancer patients have
tumours without mutations in targetable genes and; second, all patients eventually develop resistance to treatment with these targeted agents.
Lung cancer is the leading cause
of cancer mortality worldwide, suffering from a late stage
of disease at the time
of diagnosis and a paucity
of effective therapeutic strategies to treat advanced
