There were two primary characteristics the researchers used to hone in on the origins of Devils Tower: the shape of its distinctive columns and the alignment
of magnetic minerals within them.
The concentration
of these magnetic minerals is enhanced with increasing rainfall and can be used as a record of past precipitation history.

of the tools, Lepre and co-author and Lamont - Doherty colleague Dennis Kent examined
magnetic minerals beneath, around and above the spots where the tools were found.
In that portion
of the plaster models the orientation
of the
magnetic particles also matches the orientation
of the
minerals from Devils Tower: closer to vertical around the base and horizontal near the top.
The research was supported by the U.S. Department
of Energy's ARPA - E REACT program (Advanced Research Projects Agency - Energy — Rare Earth Alternatives in Critical Technologies) which develops cost - effective alternatives to rare earths, the naturally occurring
minerals with unique
magnetic properties that are used in electric vehicle (EV) motors, and wind generators.
These
minerals are oriented to
magnetic north at the time
of eruption and solidified as the magma cools.
Magnetite —
magnetic variant
of rust, or iron oxide — is one such
mineral.
Microscopic grains inside magnetite are capable
of storing information about the planet's
magnetic field, including the direction and intensity, from the time the
minerals cooled and solidified.
Because
minerals display a wide range
of slightly different
magnetic properties, they can be separated from each other by an electromagnet.
