Cluster has provided the first 3D observation
of magnetic reconnection in space — a phenomenon that reconfigures the magnetic field and releases high amounts of energy.
A recent study used
observations of magnetic reconnection from NASA's ARTEMIS — Acceleration, Reconnection, Turbulence and Electrodynamics of the Moon's Interaction with the Sun — to show that in the long tail of the nighttime magnetosphere, extending away from Earth and the sun, most of the energy is converted into heat.
The ARTEMIS spacecraft have now spent more than a decade investigating the invisible phenomena near Earth, working in tandem with other missions like Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms, and Magnetospheric Multiscale to form a complete
picture of magnetic reconnection near Earth.
Solar flares and bigger outbursts called coronal mass ejections are also
signs of magnetic reconnection, but they're not frequent enough to account for the corona's smoothness.
Numerical simulations performed by the GRAPES - 3 collaboration on this event indicate that the Earth's magnetic shield temporarily cracked due to the
occurrence of magnetic reconnection, allowing the lower energy galactic cosmic ray particles to enter our atmosphere.
This research is only possible with the unique design of MMS, which uses four spacecraft flying in a tight tetrahedral formation to give high temporal and spatial resolution
measurements of the magnetic reconnection region.
The results will make it easier for scientists to identify and study these regions, helping them explore the
microphysics of magnetic reconnection and better understand electrons» effects on Earth.
The MRX device produces laboratory
studies of magnetic reconnection, the convergence and violent separation of magnetic field lines in plasma, the state of matter that consists of free electrons and atomic nuclei.
Three - dimensional simulations have reinforced this theory, showing fan - shaped jets being formed during shearing reconnection between horizontal magnetic fields and a vertical current sheet, with the base of the jets corresponding to the
location of magnetic reconnection [6].
«We found that the energetic plasma signatures occur on high - latitude magnetic field lines that have been «closed» by the
process of magnetic reconnection, which then causes the plasma to become relatively hot,» says Dr Fear.
«The best picture yet
of magnetic reconnection in space» offer insight into the role of magnetic reconnection in celestial explosions, eruptions and extraordinary emissions of energy.
