Addressing the design flaws we have identified in teacher evaluation systems will bring districts closer to achieving the primary goal
of meaningful teacher evaluation: assuring greater equity in students» access to good teachers.
It is uncertain whether other school districts can replicate these effects, because they depend on factors that many have little control over (including the local supply of high - performing teachers), as well as those they do control (for instance, the introduction
of meaningful teacher evaluation).
Not exact matches
The failure to adopt and implement a
meaningful teacher evaluation system is indicative
of protecting the priorities
of the bureaucracy over the needs
of the students.
The city DOE and United Federation
of Teachers had spent weeks in closed door meetings trying to hammer out the details
of a «
meaningful teacher evaluation system» in order to qualify for up to $ 65 million in federal funding in School Improvement Grants over the next two years, which is distributed by the state.
Regardless, our results indicate that, under a robust system
of performance
evaluation, the turnover
of teachers can generate
meaningful gains in student outcomes, particularly for the most disadvantaged students.
After collecting and synthesizing data from 17 states and the District
of Columbia, we found that, despite state policy changes, many districts still don't factor student growth into
teacher evaluation ratings in a
meaningful way.
And centralized
teacher -
evaluation systems being pioneered by the Gates Foundation in their Measures
of Effective Teaching effort were supposed to impose
meaningful consequences for failure to perform well on those metrics.
But
evaluation systems don't have to be perfect to give us
meaningful trends, especially when we're studying thousands
of teachers.
This manifested in new systems — from School Grades to new College - and - Career Ready assessments, to
meaningful teacher evaluation — things that we can say changed the landscape by telling the truth and putting students and families at the center
of all decision - making.
Current
evaluation rubrics are simply too big — observers can't provide
meaningful feedback to
teachers on dozens
of indicators based on a few 30 - to 60 - minute observations.

Facilitating the
meaningful integration
of technology and its
evaluation into
teacher education programs is a worthwhile issue for the AACTE Committee on Innovation and Technology to pursue.

First, the city and the United Federation
of Teachers must finally agree on a fair,
meaningful teacher -

The Florida Education Association gathered 17 top
teachers and together they came up with an
evaluation system that would provide more
meaningful, productive
evaluations that
teachers could use to improve, would provide ongoing support and opportunities for
teacher promotion, and would even allow for a fair, equitable system
of merit pay.

In most states today,
teachers are given tenure automatically after three years in the classroom, with little
meaningful evaluation of their teaching effectiveness, and are extremely unlikely to be fired during their career no matter how ineffective they are.

of continuous growth, schools and school districts should encourage and support feedback loops, honest coaching conversations, and collaboration toward improved student outcomes.59 A recent report found that when
teachers are more open to feedback, their

teacher evaluation systems in recent years has created an opportunity to provide
teachers with much more effective feedback and to more intentionally target professional learning to individual
teachers» needs.61 When professional learning is rooted in collaboration and
meaningful opportunities to apply new skills, these systems can become essential components
of evaluation systems that support
teacher growth.62
In New Jersey Star - Ledger, Justin Snead, a graduate
of New Leaders» Emerging Leaders program, argues that
meaningful teacher evaluation requires participation by well - trained
teacher leaders.
The current outdated
evaluation system, established in the 1970s, does not reflect the needs
of today's
teachers, acknowledge or assess their impact on student learning, or provide them with
meaningful guidance and supports.
The diversion, as he called it, over
teacher evaluations «keeps us from talking about the real issues we face,» such as inadequate funding and lack
of meaningful teacher input at schools.

meaningful professional development opportunities and
