Z Channel not only played an incredibly wide selection
of great
movies that were swept under the rug by
studios for what was considered disappointing box office
performances, but it also helped institute what we know today as the director's cut.
Much like last year and the year before, this year's
Movie Studio Report Card evaluates both the box office
performance and overall film quality
of the six major
studios (and many indie distributors) in an attempt to determine the best and worst
studios of 2011.
In 1929, Dunne was cast as Magnolia in the Chicago company production
of Show Boat; her superlative
performance led to a
movie contract with RKO, where after a few inconsequential programmers like Leathernecking (1930), she became one
of the top dramatic stars at that
studio.
I spent much
of the
movie thinking about her Oscar - nominated turn as an intrepid Boston Globe reporter in «Spotlight» and her wrenching
performance as an Orthodox Jewish woman in the upcoming drama «Disobedience,» and wondering why the
studios can't give this brilliant actress something comparably rewarding to do.
Winstead has had a bit
of an odd trajectory in her career, going from thin supporting parts in big dumb
studio movies to a huge indie breakout with her magnificent
performance in Smashed a few years ago that she unfortunately didn't really capitalize on afterwards, but here she gets the best
of both worlds by developing a kickass character we can root for in a thrilling genre piece that also has some depth to her.
Not only is Relativity Media, the
studio that is distributing «Season
of the Witch,» promising all these elements in the new supernatural action film, but it's also claiming the
movie throws in magnificent stunts and memorable
performances that will leave audiences downright frightened.
This
performance of «Remember Me» mostly servies to remind us what
movie stars sound like singing without the benefit
of a sound
studio and hundreds
of takes.
Sean Baker, the award - winning director and co-writer
of the great new
movie, «The Florida Project,» joins Justin in
studio to discuss the film, what drew him to tell this story, the juxtaposition
of the hidden homeless living right outside
of the most magical place on Earth, the importance
of getting the details exactly right, how the
movie was inspired by «The Little Rascals,» wanting to show how children make the most out
of any situation no matter how dire, how desperation plays a big role in the film, the wonderful
performance from Willem Dafoe, the relationship between Willem and the child actors, the challenge
of working with child actors, the way Florida is portrayed in the film and what he plans to do next.
Still, the North American
performance should make every
studio uncomfortable with the idea
of putting Jack Black at the center
of a big budget live - action family
movie.
