Harnessing an invasive fish
species sounded like a promising conservation tool to help reverse the destruction wreaked by zebra
mussels on endangered native mollusks in the Great Lakes — except that it won't work, says a University
of Guelph ecologist.
But it's not any fish — different varieties
of mussels are particular about what
species of fish they hang with.
The group notes that streams that have the optimal combination
of several imperiled
mussel species, low chance
of a significant temperature swing with projected climate change and being in a protected area are few, but are a good bet to start conservation efforts.

In a research paper «Complex replacement
of invasive congeners may relax impact on native

mussels,» lead author Lyubov E. Burlakova, research scientist with the Great Lakes Center discusses the importance
of understanding those interactions.
As the
mussels transfer nutrients from the upper levels
of the lakes to the depths, yet another exotic
species, the round goby, has exploded.
One reason is that the nutrients and plankton in the waters
of the Great Lakes are not merely limited, they are crashing, due to a different exotic
species, the zebra
mussel, and its cousin, the quagga
mussel, two invaders that stowed on ships from Europe in the 1980s.
For example, the number
of native unionid
species dropped from 18 to 5 in Lake St. Clair after zebra
mussel invasion.
As
mussels cluster together in beds, they provide a protective home for hundreds
of other
species.
