of metaphors with
which Jesus describes the life
of discipleship and God's providence.

The context
of Jesus» statement about the size
of the
mustard seed is the man sowing
seed in his garden,
which is confirmed by the word «garden plants» (lachanon; # 3001 λάχανον; a potable herb; a vegetable).

of the sower who went out to sow; the parable
of the leaven in
which a woman puts in three measures
of flour till it was leavened; the parable
of the

of the farmer who sows and then waits day and night in anticipation
of the harvest; these form one group.

of the
mustard -
seed and the leaven really applied originally to the Kingdom
of God, they were certainly not intended to denote the «natural» growth
of the Kingdom, but were meant to show how inescapable will be its coming, however easily ignored or misinterpreted may be the signs
of its coming
which are conspicuous in the activity
of Jesus.
It is possible that we are on the verge
of a new era in the history
of the Church, under circumstances very different from those we have faced in the past, when Christianity will resemble the
mustard seed [Matthew 13:31 - 32], that is, will continue only in the form
of small and seemingly insignificant groups,
which yet will oppose evil with all their strength and bring Good into this world.
Nature, therefore, is to be looked upon as sacred, rather than as a mere agent
of utility for human needs, towards
which human beings are called to relate with a sense
of duty.161 The arrival
of the harvest, as may be noted from the case
of the
mustard seed, asserts that the time has come when the blessings
of the Kingdom
of God are available for all including non-human creation.
Thus the process
of growth itself is a reversal
of the state in
which the
mustard seed once was, and leading into the fulfillment
of a process.59 Such use
of metaphor, as that
of the
mustard seed, «is truly revolutionary and unprecedented, for it seeks to reverse the hearer's normal expectation.

which we have hidden from God, and how we came to embrace «faith
of pumpkin
