In the 1950s, most women were medicated during
labor and birth and most had no memory
of the
experience afterwards.
If you are well - informed
and well - supported, no matter what the outcome
of your
birth (natural childbirth with no medical intervention, pain relief, induced

Inspired by a discussion amongst the writers on Eco Child's Play about our
births and the safety
of home
births in particular, we decided to share our
labor experiences with our readers.
So I did it probably for ten, twelve sessions,
and to me, the biggest benefit was just keeping me really balanced throughout the pregnancy, with the twin pregnancy I just felt really large
and things got pretty uncomfortable towards the end, so I think for me the prenatal yoga helped me just stay balanced
and also really aware
of my body,
and I think that helped with the
birth experience, helping me be aware
of my position
and my posture, so I did an unmedicated
labor with my twins as well, so I could just really think about if I am sitting up, opening my pelvis,
and be aware
of that.

and it's not one more to - do to check from your list; it's meant to get everyone on the same page as to what you would

of risky interventions, while going too late can be intensely uncomfortable or even lead to a risky unplanned
birth en route), being able to choose how
and when to include children (who are making their own adjustments
and are less challenged by a lengthy absence
of their parents
and excessive interruptions
of family routines), enabling uninterrupted family boding
and breastfeeding, huge cost savings for insurance companies
and those without insurance,
and increasing the likelihood
of having a deeply empowering
and profoundly positive, life changing pregnancy

After working as a childbirth educator
and attending a couple hundred
births (as a doula —
labor assistant) in
birth centers, homes
and hospitals, I've come to believe that the overwhelming majority
of women intuitively gravitate to which location, type
of support
and «methodology» is best for themselves
and their unborn babies to achieve a safe passage through the giving
birth / delivering
experience.
Especially when I hear other
birth stories
and there are many obvious signs
of distress, long
and drawn out in a rough
labor,
and the baby comes out kicking
and screaming... Now that we can look back on her
birth day, while holding a healthy, resilient little one, I'm still trying to figure out a way to disconnect the wonderful, powerful, redeeming qualities
of my
experience, from the terrifying
experience at the very end.
Yet another type
of birthing style has come into its own today - hypnobirthing - using hypnosis to deal with
labor and delivery pain while enjoying the
experience of giving
birth.
A
birth plan will outline what you hope to happen during your birthing
experience like who you want in the room with you, what kind
of props you desire to help you through the contractions (such as music to listen to or pictures to look at), what kind
of pain medications you may want to take to ease your
labor pain,
and the overall mood you hope to achieve in your birthing room.
Looking at preterm
birth, which is a risk factor for newborn infant loss, a 2003 study examined 1,962 women
and found that those who reported high counts
of anxiety were more likely to
experience preterm
labor and subsequent
birth.

There are also other types
of interventions that can negatively impact your
birth experience such as manual breaking
of the water, membrane stripping, restriction
of movement during
labor, IVs, other drugs, continual fetal heart monitoring,
and episiotomies among others.
Giving Austin
Labor Support is an organization
of dedicated volunteers who provide emotional, physical
and informational support to those who are under - supported through their
birth experience in order to improve
birth outcomes
and empower women
and their families.
It's kind
of bothering, though, knowing that I never have
and never will
experience a normal
birth — normal as in having my water break, going through the
labor,
and pushing.
A long stressful
labor,
and a traumatic
birth experience with the use
of anesthesia, Pitocin,
and an abundance
of IV fluids, can slow down the production
of breast milk.
Obstetric care providers have assumed that control
of pain is the foremost concern
of laboring women,
and that effective pain relief will ensure a positive

and re-wilding herself into a deep relationship
of trust
and autonomy, allowing the physiological
and biological sequence
of natural mammalian
labor to unfold, undisturbed.
These disruptions can interfere with a woman's ultimate enjoyment
of and satisfaction with her
labor experience,
and may also compromise the safety
of birth for mother
and baby.
In addition, women who preferred a home
birth were less likely to
experience augmentation
of labor (OR 0.54 95 % CI 0.32 - 0.93)
and narcotic analgesia (OR 0.41 95 % CI 0.21 - 0.79) compared to women who preferred a
birth with obstetrician - led care.
Even if you had the perfect
labor and birth, the doctor manhandling your newborn kind
of ruins the overall
experience.
Throughout throwing up everything she consumed during
labor and pacing the halls
of her
birth center, Cheryl reflected that the pain
and ridiculousness
of the
labor experience was an abysmal way to bring a baby into the world.
But what if we could re-frame the whole
labor experience and focus on a distraction, infusing
birth with a sense
of humor or a sense
of purpose?

I think it's amazing that God saturates our earliest
experiences with our new babies in situations that stimulate the release
of oxytocin - from
labor and birth to breastfeeding
and bed sharing
and babywearing.

Ten years later my mindset had changed considerably
and I
experienced the most wonderful, momentous day
of my life when I gave
birth to my 9 lb son at home with no drugs
and a six hour
labor.
