Recent studies have found that patterns
of neural activity seen when an animal is learning a new task are replayed later during sleep.

Also there is evidence
of molecular mechanisms in the cell membranes that can amplify small changes in the field to produce large changes in
neural activity.13 On the other hand, earlier tests
of Kohler's theory found that interference with electrical gradients over the cortex had no effect on behavioral measures (
see note 11 for reference to these studies).
To truly
see how
neural activity changes during learning, we need to look bigger — at populations
of neurons, rather than one neuron at a time, which has been the standard approach to date.
He was paralyzed, but the moment he thought about using his hand, we
saw changes in
neural activity in the specific part
of the motor cortex associated with hand movement.
«When we look at the
neural processes that take place in the brain while processing the symbols, we
see that around 400 milliseconds after the presentation
of the to - be-counted symbol, there is an extreme reduction in brain
activity, although it should normally be very high,» explains Schmidt.
Using electroencephalography (EEG)-- in which electrodes placed in the brain measure
neural activity — the team
saw a sharp wave
of action in the mouse brains from the hippocampus in the midbrain to the neocortex (the outermost brain layer).
Brain scans revealed
activity in the fusiform face area, responsible for recognising real faces, they report in «
Seeing Jesus in Toast:
Neural and behavioral correlates
of face pareidolia» (doi.org/vn8).
We can also couple that with microfluidics to administer neuromodulators, hormones and other molecules and
see how site - selective administration
of the chemicals modifies
neural activity.
Optogenetics, the use
of light to control
neural activity, is a powerful technique that has
seen widespread use in neuroscience research.
Traditionally, it was thought that the there were three main factors that derived from CNS
activity that subsequently affected EMG amplitude: the motor unit recruitment extent, the motor unit firing frequency, and the synchronisation
of these electrical impulses (with greater synchronisation perhaps implying greater
neural drive from the CNS)(
see review by Behm, 1995).
Given the role
of serotonergic neurotransmission in cognitive control and impulsivity (Gorwood et al. 2000; Mann et al. 2001; Purselle and Nemeroff 2003; Retz et al. 2004; Strobel et al. 2007; Walderhaug et al. 2007;
see, however, Clark et al. 2005 for negative evidence), the current findings
of greater error - evoked thalamic
activity in women seem to indicate a potentially useful intermediate
neural phenotype to further elucidate gender differences in depression.
