Allow me to make a case
for writing
novellas and see if some
of these ideas fit your annual goals.
For instance, the development
of short story to
novella and novel is not discovery but innovative modes
of short story into
novella and novel.
I will rarely pay more than $ 2.99
for a
novella (what I define as 20,000 — 40,000 words) and especially not if I have never heard
of the author before.
In The Dangerous Kind (ahem: my
novella found in the huge collection
of short stories, Murders Among Dead Trees on sale
for a short time
for just 99 cents) a boy forms a plan to murder his abusive older brother on a hunting trip.
Some authors write
novellas in between novels just
for a change
of pace.
My strategy
for the rest
of the year will be to write my Amazon Kindle World
novellas (word count sweet spot ranging 25,000 - 30,000 words)-- I have 4 so far with releases in Feb, May, July, Nov — then link in one to two
of my Ryker Townsend (FBI Profiler Series) with word counts at 50,000 - 60,000 words each.
As you likely already know... it's extremely difficult to get an agent or publisher
for a
novella... short story... or collection
of short stories... unless you're already a well - published and / or award - winning author.
