More than
half of all opioid prescriptions in the United States are written for people with anxiety, depression, and other mood disorders, according to a new study that questions how pain is treated in this vulnerable population.
At the same time, recent research has found that more than half
of all opioid prescriptions in the U.S. are going to people with existing mental health conditions like depression or anxiety.
Prominent among the causes cited were «the increased availability
of opioid prescriptions for pain» and the falling price and rising potency of heroin.
«Despite representing only 16 percent of the adult population, adults with mental health disorders receive more than half
of all opioid prescriptions distributed each year in the United States,» said Matthew Davis, lead author of the study and assistant professor at the U-M School of Nursing.

The authors measured the time to opioid cessation for any individual receiving an opioid prescription within 90 days after surgery, with the date of cessation defined by the
absence of any opioid prescription within the preceding 90 days.
And, according to the authors of a new literature review in the May issue of The Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, orthopaedic surgeons are the third highest
prescribers of opioid prescriptions among physicians in the United States — behind primary care physicians and internists.
The CDC's guidance is mainly about the point I made above, that the over-prescription of opioids is the real cause of the epidemic, not just the crushable version of Oxycontin, and the
limitation of opioid prescription is one of the huge policy interventions that is needed.

«Results of our study show within five days of surgery, most patients are experiencing relatively little pain, and yet, most still had well over half
