What's Winter without a bit
of orange spiced treats?

You make the syrup by simmering a bottle
of red wine with sugar and
spices you have around (cinnamon, cloves, maybe an
orange peel)- although
spices aren't entirely necessary.
Fall... the season
of Pumpkin
Spice Lattes, woolly socks,
orange leaves and — for many
of us — open enrollment.
It's such a delicious salad, filled with an amazing array
of fresh flavours from sweet pomegranates, to juicy
orange slices, crunchy carrot slithers and a great mix
of herbs and
spices.
I forgo the dried citron or
orange peel and head instead for fresh
spices, raisins, and plenty
of dried cranberries and sweet - sour dry cherries.
I tweaked the recipe a little bit — used fresh cranberries instead
of dried, and the zest
of one
of the
oranges, and I used 2 tsp mixed
spice and 1/2 tsp cinnamon instead
of the cinnamon and ginger — and they were amazing!
On every corner you see piles
of the best dried fruit — my favourite being the dates, apricots, figs — as well as more nuts than you can possibly image, heaps
of insanely colourful, totally exotic herbs and
spices, brilliant dried tea mixes, awesome honey and nut based bars (I'm obsessed) and the world's best, most freshest juices — pomegranate and
orange being my new favourite, possibly the yummiest juice ever.
A Bite Inspired by... Jack O'Lanterns: I love this time
of year —
orange leaves, crisp air, Jack O'Lanterns on every door step, and,
of course, the eagerly awaited return
of pumpkin
spice.
Here I jazzed up that basic bread recipe with fresh cranberries,
orange zest, walnuts, vanilla, and warm
spices with a bit
of coconut sugar to add a touch
of sweetness.
Something about the aroma
of warm nutmeg
spice, creamy eggnog, and scent
of orange makes every bite feel like «Festivity Served in Plate»!
These brownies look delicious and I must try them; I am intrigued by this bitter
orange spice you refer to; as we use bitter
oranges a lot in Lebanese cooking (its juice, peel and blossoms) I would love to get a hold
of that
spice.
The cake is made with a heavy share
of butternut squash puree
spiced with cinnamon and a little
orange zest.
This year i made a ton
of stuff:
orange ginger marmalade, blueberry jam, lemon curd, vanilla sugar, caramelised walnuts,
spiced honey, cardamom coffee beans and
orange & clove loose leaf tea.
They are topped off with smooth
Spiced Date Icing and a sprinkle
of orange zest for colour!
Sprinkle on all
of the
spices, and then juice the
orange over the duck, getting out as much juice as possible.
These
orange triangles
of happiness are made with real pumpkin and pumpkin pie
spices, and they quickly vanish from the pastry case when fall rolls around.
I made these danishes back in full summer, but with their warm notes
of spice and
orange, they seemed too cozy and autumnal to share just then.
The filling,
of apples and cranberries, flavoured with
orange liqueur, and the crunch
of nutty pecans, all
spiced with cinnamon and cardamom, is warm and festive and all winter cozy.
Also, instead
of doing the
orange zest, I used a tsp
of pumpkin
spice for a different flavor.
Bell peppers, or capsicums are they are known in India (the green ones are unripe versions
of the yellow,
orange and red ones) impart acidity,
spice, sweetness and a tiny bit
of bitterness.
I wanted a sun tea but a lot
of my teas are comfort teas with cinnamon,
orange or chai
spices.
While I am not one
of those people who needs everything I eat this time
of year to be bright
orange and pumpkin - flavored (still baffled by the pumpkin
spice almond milk at Trader Joe's...), I do enjoy my fair share
of the seasonal favorite.
Just like the traditional Simnel cake, they feature marzipan and lots
of dried fruit and
spices, and are then dipped in a delicious
orange glaze and decorated with crystallized ginger.
I've also taken to
spicing it up with ground ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, and spiking the egg white mix with a dash
of orange essence and vanilla extract and also add maple syrup for more flavor.
I hate Nutmeg, so left it out as such, but chucked in a good bit
of home - made Vadouvan
spice - mix (see for example Pinterest for recipe) and also added grated peel and juice
of one (small)
orange.
A small pinch
of turmeric powder will add a nice
orange - yellow color to
spice vegetables or mix it into dressings.
I added cinnamon but you can go down the ginger root, cardamon, maybe some
orange zest or juice, just add a pinch
of the
spice you fancy and get experimenting!
I made a double batch
of this as a Christmas gift today, only I did an «
orange spice» scent — sweet
orange, clove, and cinnamon essential oils.

spice that will add a yellow

next time I make it with pumpkin, I think I'll use
orange zest instead
of spices and add fresh cranberries instead
of chocolate chips or cacao nibs — that sounds like a perfect Thanksgiving / holiday bread.
