film... or even a Christmas Special.
Having seen nearly every computer -
animated film made, I would rank Shrek and Shrek 2 near the top
of the second tier, just below the fine
films of Pixar and on par with DreamWorks»
other successes (like Antz, Over the Hedge).
Maybe at this point it's too much to hope for an
animated film like The Angry Birds Movie to exist as anything
other than marketing fodder, but hopefully it's not too much to ask for that #content to have a shred
of substance to it.
Best
animated film nominee The Croods, Fox's highest - grossing
film last year (though with just $ 587 million worldwide, good for 11th place overall), was one
of just two Oscar nominations for the studio (the
other came for John Williams» Book Thief score).
He's the former chairman and chief executive
of 20th Century Fox
Filmed Entertainment, he oversaw the video release
of «Fantasia» and
other animated classics for Disney, he co-produced «Coraline» (2005) and Terrence Malick's «The New World» (2005), and in 2010 he co-produced the Academy Awards show.
Except to say that whoever thought it was appropriate to have these beloved characters shooting at each
other and talking about killing each
other (on top
of Mater's disastrous cultural insensitivity) should never work on a children's
animated film again.
And so we're tweaking our «Best
of the 21st Century» formula (check out our Horror
Films,
Animated and Music Documentary features) to look instead at the top - grossing
films of the century to date, and seeing how, in this season
of bottom lines and billions and box office bombs, the 25 reigning champions
of the century stack up against each
other in terms
of quality.
For our first show
of 2018, we welcome writer and critic Dr Eloise Ross, who joins us as we check out some
of the key
films from this month, including Steven Spielberg's paean to press freedoms The Post (01:04), Guillermo Del Toro's dark romantic fantasy The Shape

There are plenty
of other animated and
other films in the sea, thus my lack
of interest in seeking KFP out.
Other rarities I've recently found include Chekhov's Motifs (aka Chekhovian Motifs), one
of the craziest features by the Russian eccentric Kira Muratova (it's on a Russian label with optional English subtitles and available in the U.S.); a fascinating collection
of animated World War II propaganda from Disney, some
of it unavailable since that time; a splendid French letterboxed copy
of Anthony Mann's Man
of the West; Charles Burnett's To Sleep With Anger and two Kenji Mizoguchi
films (released on the British labels BFI and Artificial Eye, respectively); and Louis Feuillade's stunning 1916 French serial Judex on an American label.
We kick off the show looking at some
of this month's key

Other incarnations, from stage and screen's The Wiz to the $ 60 M CG -
animated feature Legends
of Oz: Dorothy Returns that has been «coming soon» for years, have produced or will produce their detractors, unquestionably being judged harshly against the magic and marvels
of the iconic, enduring Judy Garland
film.
Other notable projects included Max Ophuls» 1953 drama «The Earrings
of Madame de...,» Jacques Demy's beloved 1967 musical «The Young Girls
of Rochefort» and the 2007 Oscar - nominated
animated film «Persepolis.»
On its own, «MU» is a success because
of a smart script, simple, but relatable humor, and its honesty — all qualities missing from most
other recent
animated films.
This latest Disney picture, Beauty and the Beast, joins a growing list
of live - action movies which traces its origins to
animated films, including «The Jungle Book,» «Pete's Dragon,» «Cinderella» and «Maleficent,» among
others.
The
film — Anderson's second
animated feature, after Fantastic Mr. Fox — will star Bryan Cranston, Greta Gerwig, Bill Murray, and a number
of Anderson's
other favorites, and center on a young boy searching the titular island for his lost pooch.
In Aardman's cinematic absence,
others have kept the art
of stop - motion alive; among this year's
Animated Feature Oscar nominees are two
films — Henry Selick's Coraline and Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr. Fox — made in the painstaking frame - by - frame format.
Not that the characters look realistic, but within their established cartoon world, their movements are completely fluid, their environs intricately presented, and even the physics
of their action carry the proportions necessary to avoid taking us out
of the moment, as so many
other recent
animated films tend to do.
Most critics are saying that the
film features a lot
of hi - jinx that kids are sure to enjoy, even if it doesn't reach the same emotional heights as
other animated films.
In
other words, it was no behemoth and a far cry from the numbers that the computer -
animated films of Pixar, DreamWorks, Blue Sky, and Disney earn, but a respectable attraction nonetheless.

Like the surrogates at the heart
of the
film, it's certainly
animated, but without the meat, guts, heart or original thought, Surrogates never amounts to existing as anything
other than a good - looking pretender.
But none
of the
film's scenes or characters suggest an improvement on the 1950
animated film, or on many
of the
other, non-Disney adaptations
of this classic fairy tale.
Focus Features and LAIKA Entertainment are bringing us an
animated experience that is reminiscent
of LAIKA's
other feature length
films such as The Boxtrolls, Paranorman, and Coraline.
The rehash
of the «incredible contraption»
of so many
other animated films (eg.
After years
of waiting, it's a pleasure to finally sink into «The peanuts Movie», the latest
animated movie from Blue Sky Studios that radiates charm like no
other film of its genre.
Though not as quick - witted or dramatically affecting as some
of the
other films Disney released in the surrounding years, Mulan is a
film that wins you over on its own merits, even if it does not stand up to direct comparison to
other animated triumphs.

The project has been in the works for years and marks the next step for the franchise, which already includes

of which has deleted scenes, «Tales from the Future» documentary segments, audio commentaries and various
other bonus material, there's also a separate bonus disc that includes a variety

of only five Best Picture nominees, was Disney's «Beauty and the Beast» in 1991.
The English - language version
of «Mune» features an all - star cast
of animation veterans, including Rob Lowe (Simba on Disney Channel's «The Lion Guard»), Ed Helms (most recently the voice

Animated Feature nod for the former, and a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Heath Ledger for the latter, among a mess
of other, lesser nods.

There is something satisfying about five thirty - something men going into an afternoon screening
of an
animated «children's»
film that features talking animals, and noting
other audience members
of a similar age.
The realistic movements
of the characters are probably the best thing about the
film, crafted through a motion capture process, similar to the one producer Robert Zemeckis used in his
other 3D
animated film, The Polar Express.
