of doom, it simulates the experience
of visiting
other art fairs.
The
fair, which is now in its second year in the city
of New York, has become one
of the more noteworthy additions to an already crowded week
of sales and
fairs, with its focus towards high - end blue chip artworks in conjunction with classic design, artifacts and
other fields, a focus that makes it both a concentration
of the focus
of many
fair proceedings around town, and an elaboration, seeking buyers new to the field
of collecting fine
art, furniture, or otherwise, through a more organic mode.
Mr. McMillan said part
of the problem is traffic; whereas Saturdays used to be the day when visitors poured into galleries, now crowds on that and
other days have noticeably thinned, a decline he attributes to
art buying through social media as well as the fatigue
of «an
art fair every month.»
Past winners have gone on to solo - exhibitions with the gallery, presentations at
art -
fairs, or inclusions in publications, such as «100 Painters
of Tomorrow», as well as
other noteworthy opportunities with Beers and
other galleries alike.

This week on ArtInfo we've been talking to some
of the major
art world players who are here at the Armory Show and the
other fairs.
Tim Marlow, Artistic Director, Royal Academy
of Arts, said, «The calibre
of artworks, galleries and visitors makes Frieze Masters a
fair like no
other.
Maybe not, but the 2013 Armory Show, Moving Image, the Independent,
other fairs, and «Decenter» sure inspire fear for the state
of the
art.
The selection is impressive not only for its breadth
of well - known names, like Tyeb Mehta, M. F. Husain, S. H. Raza, Akbar Padamsee, but also for its clever inclusion
of the prominent contemporary South Asian artists like Subodh Gupta & A. Balasubramamium, among
others, whose resumes include exhibitions at international bienniales, and
art fairs.
Unlike most
other fairs, Frieze takes place at the heart
of its host city, forming part
of London's vibrant cultural fabric and international
art scene.
On the
other hand, one has to wonder at a
fair so dedicated to the dignity
of American
art that, to single out one
of the finest, Barbara Gladstone manages to turn Robert Bechtle into an heir to Edward Hopper.
Saltz was putting into words what anyone walking around an
art fair (not just the big ones, it should be noted; the worst offenders seemed to be hipster galleries showing at the likes
of Independent, New York, or Liste, Basel) during the last couple
of years might have noticed: an abundance
of abstract painting that seems to have no value
other than a decorative one.
Art Los Angeles Contemporary, which was held last weekend at Barker Hangar at the Santa Monica airport, is by no means as extreme an example
of this as
other larger
fairs around the country.
The ADAA
Art Show is still the classiest March act — now a week ahead
of the
other fairs, as if to set it more firmly apart.

On March 5, 2015, Moving Image
art fair will open again in New York to offer its visitors a unique viewing experience and the vitality
of a
fair by featuring a selection
of international commercial galleries and non-profit institutions presenting single - channel videos, single - channel projections, video sculptures, and
other large video installations.
This seems to be a breakout year for digital fabrication in
art: a number
of inexpensive 3D printers have hit the retail market; the 3D Printshow — a
fair founded in London in 2012 showcasing the commercial and creative applications
of this technology — held its first event in New York this past February (with plans for
other venues around the world); and «Out
of Hand: Materializing the Postdigital» — touted as the «first in - depth exhibition exploring digital fabrication in contemporary
art» — is on view at the Museum
of Arts and Design (MAD) in New York through June 1.
